Reggane

Reggane is an oasis of Algérie located at the north of the Désert of the Tanezrouft, in the Wilaya of Adrar.

Recent discoveries (2006) of gas in the area of Reggane make it return in the topicality.

Rockets and nuclear tests

The area of Reggane was the place of the first tests of the French atomic bombs starting from February 13rd 1960. The polygon of shooting was located at 50 km, south-west; 4 tests officially took place there of which the first, Gerboise blue , reached 70 kT is 4 times the power of the bomb of Hiroshima.

The 13 underground shootings which followed were carried out more in the south with In Hecker (24°03' NR, 5°03' E), in the solid mass of the Hoggar and finished in 1966. The site was evacuated only in 1967.

A field of fire for French sounding rockets was built (latitude: 37°43' NR, longitude: 0°17' E). It was used for shootings Veronique (2) and especially Centaure (10) between 1961 and the June 24th 1965.
