Regatta

The regatta is a Course speed between several Bateau X, generally of the Voilier S. It is held on a course delimited by Bouée S. the competitors must circumvent them in the direction defined by the committee of race.

There exist two main categories of regattas to the veil: the regatta floats about it , most widespread, and the match-racing , where only two ships clash. The most famous regatta disputed in match-racing is the Coupe of America.

The course more used is called “Olympic triangle” (because used formerly with OJ). It is delimited by three buoys what makes it possible the competitors to sail under different paces. Other courses such as the coastal course, the standard course trapezoid or the course in return ticket (course used in Match-racing) exist.

The starting line is always located vis-a-vis the wind.

The regatta is practiced as a recluse, double or crew and on all types of water levels: interiors or at sea. The sailing ships used are varied: Center-board, Board with veil, livable, Catamaran of sport, Multihull S…

At the time of a regatta between Monotype S, the boats are identical, they result from the same class (for example Optimist, 420, 470…). On the contrary, a regatta intersery engages the participation of different boats. These convivial regattas imply the recourse to times compensated in order not to penalize the boats less the fabrics.

With regard to the rules of the game, the two documents which make it possible to establish them are the instructions of race and the rules of race. The rules of races form the lawful base of all the regattas. It are written in English by the international authority of the veil: the ISAF (International Sailing Federation) which updates them every four years. They are translated into French by the French federation of veil (FFV). The instructions of race are given to each crew at the time of the inscription and detail the course of the regatta: departure, course, arrived… They are specific to each regatta.

Several committees are present to frame each regatta: the Steering Committee which is responsible within the organizing club for the good progress of the regatta, the committee of race establishes the course and the classification and the committee of complaint, which is independent of the organizer, inform and judge the complaints.

The regatta is a sport as much as a leisure, it is a play of address which calls upon technical skills. It implies to find a strategy according to the other competitors, of the water level, the variations of the Vent, the effects of the current and the sea. It also implies to be in the physical fine shape to carry out the tackings in particular.

The regatta is an excellent means of progressing. The participants unceasingly seek more quickly to reach the finishing line.

The control of its boat, the concepts of weather and the characteristics of the water level are requirements to gain. The régatiers often say that the victory belongs to the crew which makes less possible errors.
