A refinery is a Usine from which the goal is to extract from a material of the products with high commercial value.

Refinery with oil

A refinery with oil is intended to extract from the Crude oil the maximum of useful oil products.

History

The first refinery in the world is put in exploitation in 1857, with Ploiesti in Romania.

In France, the 1st major accident in a refinery took place in the refinery of Feyzin on January 4th, 1966 (18 dead).

In general, one finds in a refinery of the treatment units and units additional such as:

  • an atmospheric distillation (topping);

  • a distillation under-vacuum (vacuum links);
  • a hydro-treating (hydrotreating links);
  • a hydrodesulfurization (hydrodesulfurization links);
  • a catalytic reformor (catalytic to reform);
  • of the utilities: boilers, compressed air… (utilities);
  • of the storage vats (storage park);
  • of the means of reception and forwarding (reception & forwarding means).

For a complex refinery, other treatment units are used as well as petrochemical units.
