Referendum over the presidential five-year period
The purpose of the referendum of September 24th, 2000 over the presidential five-year period , subjected to the votes of the French by the president of the Republic, Jacques Chirac, was to reduce the duration of the 7 years presidential mandate to 5 years.
The French voted in this direction and the Quinquennat was applied for the first time at the time of the following mandate starting after the presidential election of 2002.
