Reef knot

The reef knot a Node very running, easy to make. Constituted as two Overhand knot S reversed, it serves to connect two ends of a of the same rope Diamètre, such as for example binding the laces of its shoes or making a Bow tie. When the ropes are not of the same diameter, it is necessary to use a Nœud of listening.

One rather often confuses it with the node called in tail of pig (still called Nœud of housewife or Granny knot) which is, him, a node of less good behavior. In the same way, badly carried out one obtains a node known as “of the robber” which is untied easily under tension.

To make a reef knot, it is necessary to turn a rope around the other, while starting with the line, and to make one second loop in the other direction, while starting with the left. If one makes the second loop while starting with the line, one makes a node in tail of pig. Another solution is to make two half hitches reversed on one of the two ropes tended, then to even fold up it on him.

If the reef knot is completely useful to bind the two ends of the same rope around an object to tighten this one (like the shoe in the case of laces, or to close a bag…), it on the other hand is strongly disadvised carrying it out like ajut between two distinct ropes, on which there will be tension. Indeed, so by misfortune one of the two ropes is a little stiffer than the other, this node is likely to be turned over and to be demolished, which makes say to Clifford Ashley, author of The Ashley book off knots, a book which refers as regards nodes since 1945: “The reef knot responsible with him only of more than deaths than all the others is undoubtedly joined together”.
