The red of the meadows is a French Race Bovin E . (old name: Maine-Anjou )
Origin
It is originating in the West of France (Anjou and Maine), and more precisely of the Field of the Streets (Tracked-Changed, Maine and the Loire), property of the Maison of Red. This race was consisted Olivier de Rougé as from 1830 per crossing of a rustic local race, the mancelle one with bulls of race durham of origin British, sought for their precocity and their bouchères qualities. The creation of the herd book goes back to 1909.90% of the animals red of the meadows are in area Pays of the Loire, like in various areas, in particular Normandy, Poitou-Charentes, Nord-Pas-de-Calais. That wants to say that the bond with the soil is important: indeed the historical cradle has characteristics proprs as a hydrous deficit which involves an early end of growth and quickly being ressuyant ground. These characteristics allow the Red close expressing all its genetic potential with regard to its rusticity. The livestock includes/understands approximately 70.000 cows. It was also exported in various countries: the United States, Canada, Australia, Russia…
Morphology
The dress is black and white dark red, with often a white spot on the face and the white legs. The mucous membranes are clear. The horns are laid out while growing broad directed forwards.C' is bovine of large size, the female has a height with the garrot of 1,40 to 1,45 m and an average weight from 750 to 850 kg. The male makes 1,70 m with the garrot and can weigh up to 1700 kg. This race holds the world records with the Royal bull (1922 kg in 1988 with the agricultural open competition of Paris) and with the cow Campanule (1316 kg with the same contest in 1996).
Aptitudes
It is a robust race, of a good longevity, prolific with a relatively strong proportion of twin births (6%). Previously selected for its double aptitude meat and milk, it from now on is directed towards the production of Viande (nursing cow). Another characteristic: Is marketed under the label of origin only the cows having calved, which allows a maturity of the more important meat and thus more taste. She is very appreciated for the quality of her spotted meat: " its supported red color, its tendreté with the cut and the attack in mouth, its jutosity raised at the end of the mouth and stable progressively of the chewing as well as the intensity and the persistence of the saveurs" (extracted the board of inquiry INAO). This one obtained the creation of a name AOC Maine-Anjou which justified the name change of the race in “red of the meadows”, a AOC which cannot take the name of a race.Notes and references of the article
