Geography
Situation
The solid mass breaks up in the following way:-
Red Needles, strictly speaking
- the Massive of Pormenaz, in the west
It is sprinkled by the Arve in the south and the east, which separates it from the Massif of Mont Blanc, and Diosaz which partly separates it from the Massif of Haut-Giffre in the North-West.
Morphology
Contrary to the solid mass of Mont Blanc, the Red Needles are deprived of Glacier of scale. A alpine stage leaves the place towards 1 800 m with the rough rocks, above a series of broken needles springs, Col of Montets until Brévent. The north-Western part of the solid mass remains low in vegetation because of its weak exposure to the sun. Contrary, the other pouring abounds in plant species which developed thanks to a multitude of Biotope S. It is possible to discover a typical flora but also Droséra S, Lys martagon and many Orchis. In order to protect this solid mass, the Natural reserve of the needles Rouges was created in 1974 and it covers 3 279 ha. One distinguishes there the Red Needles (vis-a-vis the Mont Blanc) and back from the Needles (turned towards the Lac of Annecy).
The Red Needles offer a splendid sight on all the needles of Chamonix, the glaciers of the Mount Blanc and the roof of Europe. The French painter Samivel laid down some of these splendid sights on the solid mass of Mont Blanc. The culminating point of this unit bears well its name of Aiguille of the View-point because it offers a sight to 360° on the solid masses which surround the solid mass of the Red Needles; the crossing between Flégère and Planpraz, with the feet of the Red Needles, is called the Grand Southern Balcony .
On the oriental party of the solid mass, one finds many lakes of mountain of which most remarkable is the White Lac with the foot of the Needle of the View-point.
The solid mass shelters the principal schools of Escalade of Chamonix; the Clochetons of Planpraz were made universally famous for the mountaineer Gaston Rébuffat.
