Red hen

Also called rail of Maurice , the red hen or red hen with nozzle of woodcock ( Aphanapteryx bonasia ) is a bird Gruiforme of the family of the Rallidé S formerly endemic of the Mauritius and now disappeared.

Its existence is attested by a certain number of accounts and illustrations of travellers and by many bones.

François Leguat announces as of 1693 that it became rare. As there were not any more mentions with the bird in the literature of voyage thereafter, it is estimated that hunting made disappear this species unable to fly and whose flesh was pleasant with the palate towards 1700.

The red hen is reproduced on a stamp emitted by the Post office Mauritian of a value of five rupees.
