Red book of Hergest
The Red book of Hergest (in Welsh: Llyfr coch Hergest ) is one of most important Welsh medieval manuscripts the. It contains at the same time prose and poetry and was written towards 1382 - 1410.
It is preserved at Oxford, in the Bibliothèque bodléienne for the Jesus College (Oxford) (ms 111), it is a gift made by Thomas Wilkins in 1701.
One of some copyists having taken part in the drafting of the manuscript was identified as being Hywel Fychan fab Hywel Goch of Buellt. One knows that he worked for Hopcyn ap Tomas ab Einion (about 1330 - after 1403) of Ynysforgan, Abertawe, and it is possible that the manuscript was carried out for him.
The name of the manuscript comes from the red leather binding and association with the place Plas Hergest, in the Herefordshire in the Welsh Marches.
