Originating in China and crossing the Vietnam to lead in the southernmost China Sea, the Red river (in Vietnamese Sông Hồng or Hồng Hà ; in Mandarin 红河, hóng He ; in Hani Lalsa ) Yuan Jiang is also called (元江, Pinyin yuán jiāng ), which means “original river”.

The river takes its source in the Yunnan. Its course has a south-eastern general orientation, through the areas populated by the minority Dai, before leaving China in the autonomous prefecture of Honghe (Yunnan). It enters to Vietnam the Province of Lào Cai, and finally reached the edge is capital, Hanoi.

The bridge Long Good, the old bridge Paul-Doumer of the French still stretches its metal carcass above the Rouge river in Hanoi. It was seriously damaged by the American Bombardement S of 1954 with 1972. Rebuilt after a fashion, it however was doubled, a few kilometers further, by a work started with the Chinese and completed by the Soviet .

The Tonkin constitutes the Delta river. The river Noire is an affluent of the Rouge river.

At the time colonial, the French and other powers tried to make river Rouge a commercial artery towards China, with a certain success.
