Red Little book
The entitled book Quotations of President Mao Zedong (毛主席语录 Pinyin: Máo Zhǔxí Yǔlù), more known under the name of red Little book , was published by the government of the Popular republic of China starting from 1966. The distribution was organized by Lin Biao, the Minister for defense and the chief of the Army of release of people (ALP). As its title indicates it, it is a collection of quotations extracted from old speeches and writings from Mao. The additional title the red Little book was allotted to him in Occident because of its edition in pocket format, which was especially printed and diffused to facilitate the use of it, but this name was never used in China, where it does not mean anything.
The number of printed specimens was with the measurement of this country of more than one billion inhabitants: time of Mao, any Chinese citizen was indeed to have it, read it and to have it constantly on him. To the paroxysm of the Cultural revolution, the sorrows incurred in the event of incapacity to present the book and to recite it on request red Guards could go from the immediate corporal punishment to the forced labors during several years.
During the Cultural revolution, the study of the book was not only obligatory in the schools (of primary school education to the superior) but it was also practiced on the work place. All the organizations, industrial, commercial, agricultural, administrative, military organized training courses in groups of all the personnel to study the book during the work hours. The quotations of Mao were printed in fat and red, and almost all the written publications, including the scientific works, were to quote Mao.
Against the objection that was against-productive, one argued that the comprehension and the assimilation of the “thought Mao Zedong” could improve in an irreversible way the spirit with work, and thus to compensate largely on the level of the production the time spent to this study. However, reality was very different and it is generally considered, nowadays, that the Cultural revolution was a true economic disaster.
During the years 1960, the red Little book was the graphic symbol most visible in China, omnipresent still than the portraits of the President himself. On the images, the posters, the panels carried out by the artists charged with the Propaganda, almost each character, except for Mao, appeared smiling, animated of an unshakeable determination, and holding with the hand the red Little book.
The quotations of Mao are classified in thirty-three chapters. The topics are approached under an ideological angle marked by Communism but for the Vertu. In one of the many metaphors of the book, Mao compares the incorrect thoughts with the diseases, and the Communist party with a surgeon. The member of the “faulty” sect is thus a pervert deviationist who should be rehabilitated (décervelage systematic).
After the end of the Cultural revolution in 1976 and the accession with the capacity of Deng Xiaoping in 1978, the importance of the book decreased enormously and the forward setting of the quotations of Mao started to be regarded deviationism of left and as worship of the personality. In fact, today, the book is regarded more only as memory the one completed time.
