History
The Drapeau of Cuba was drawn by Miguel and Émilia Teurbe Tolon (an exiled cuban couple with New York) in 1849. Asked by the general Narciso López, a flibustier Venezuelan wishing to release Cuba.Narciso López (1797-1853), military Venezuelan, become business man in Cuba after having married the rich person cuban owner Dolores Frías (sister of the Count de Pozos Dulces), had organized a Conspiracy against the Spanish colonial government in the island known under the name of Conspiration of Mined of Rosa Cubana. The discovered conspiracy, it had to be exiled in the United States and from La Nouvelle-Orléans to prepare the first independence invasion of the island. For this fact, it recruits among the veterans of the war against Mexico, of the North-American soldiers ready, subject to remuneration, to engage in an armed struggle against the Spaniards. May 19th, 1850, on board the Créole boat, accompanied by 608 men it unloads in the locality of Cárdenas, near Matanzas, in the western part of the island. The catch of the city had a character symbolic system because the cuban flag whose solitary star represented the dream annexationist, was hoisted for the first time on the ground of the island. This first invasion was a failure. A second attempt will be undertaken by Narciso López, this time at the west of Havana, in the coastal region of Playitas. But, there still the invasion fails and after several engagements the men dispersed and López finally was stopped, then condemned to die in the torment with the garrot (a death considered as vulgar compared to the post, rather reserved to the honourable enemies).
The flag is adopted the May 20th 1902 when the Cuban Republic is founded, after having to gain Cuba its independence of the Spain in 1898.
Interpretation
The white star names Estrella Solitaria (“the solitary Star”) and is identified with freedom dearly acquired, the triangle is the maconnic representation of the equality and its red color the versed Sang at the time of the combat of independence. The blue bands represent the ex-departments which controlled the island and the Blanc hes symbolize peace.The three colors (blue, white and red), point out the triptych of the French revolution: “freedom, equality, fraternity”.
It is twice longer than broad.
