The Red Arrows ( red Arrows French ) are the lifting Patrouille of the Royal Air Force . They are based since 2001 with Scampton in the Lincolnshire.
The patrol was created on March 1st 1965 and its first public meeting took place with Clermont-Ferrand the May 9th 1965.
Of 1965 with 1969, the Red Arrows had as leader Ray Hanna, who created the majority of their emblematic figures (in particular famous “the Diamond 9”) and which hold the record of longevity as a leader of the formation.
In 1977, they will add up to them 1000e representation, in 1986 them 2000e, 1995 them 3000e and 2006 them 4000e, and that in more than 50 countries in the world (more than 60 representations in France).
In 2006, the Red Arrows gave 80 representations in Europe.
The Red Arrows are equipped with planes of English drives: initially the Folland Gnat and, since 1980, the BAe Hawk T.Mk1.
The team is made up of 10 pilots, including 9 in flight and a coordinator on the ground. Their code is Red one with Red ten ( Red 1 with Red 10 ). All have a 1500 hours minimum of flight on a jet of the Royal Air Force . The logistic team on the ground (nickname: The Blues ) consists of 85 people.
There is no pilot of replacement, the patrol evolving/moving then with eight in the event of absence of pilot. Their spectacle lasts on average 22 minutes and can vary according to the cloud cover.
The evolutions of the Red Arrows are done in formation, which amounts saying that the 9 aircraft fly very close from/to each other (from 2 to 3 away meters). Each formation bears a specific name.
