This competition was created in 1989. Until 1998 it opposed the winners of the Copa Libertadores and the Supercopa Sudamericana, then with the disappearance of the latter it is the winner of the Copa Sudamericana which took part in the duel.In 1991, Olimpia gained the trophy without playing because this team had already gained the Copa Libertadores and Supercopa Sudamerica. In 1994 the same situation occurred, but the double winner São Paulo FC saw himself opposing the winner of Copa CONMECON, which did not prevent São Paulo FC from gaining Recopa Sudamericana.
