Rebirth

The rebirth is a practice of personal development used also in Psychothérapie, based on a technique of breathing which modifies the state of consciousness, by Hyperventilation of that which practices it, in order to release the negative emotions which would have been accumulated, without being expressed, following various lived traumatisms. The principal traumatism aimed by the first experts was that of the birth which would condition all the existence of the human being. The technique evolved/moved considerably to date and its objective is to learn how to the patient most harmoniously to integrate possible any duality or emotion/driven back tension, without search for cathartic experiment. The rebirth is also called rebirth , palingenesis and conscious breathing . A close technique is the holotropic Respiration of Stanislas Grof.

Origin

The practice of exercises of breathing to modify the state of consciousnesses is present in the Yoga and the Taoïsme. The rebirth would have directly taken as a starting point these techniques. It is the American Leonard Orr who initiated the modern practice by adapting it to the needs for psychotherapy, such as it conceived them, in the years 1970. This last fitted in the humanistic current of psychology. The technique was imported into France by the psychologist Dominique Levadoux, into which it integrated the theoretical aspects of the Psychanalyse and the Gestalt-therapy.

Course of a meeting

The patient and the rebirthor (the therapeutist which practices the rebirth ) first of all exchange on the symptoms to treat and/or benefits required. The rebirthor then informs the patient on unfolding of the meeting like on his disturbing effects (tingling at the end of the members, dizzy spell, intense emotional upheaval, etc)

Then, the patient, lying on a mattress, must release himself. Begin then a breathing, known as circular (i.e. without pause between the inspiration and the expiry or the expiry and the inspiration), by the top of the thorax, the nose or the opened mouth, in alarming only of the inspiration. This breathing must be full, but without exaggeration. All these details are gradually explained to the patient who is guided to carry them out as well as possible.

Without the directives of an experienced rebirthor, this breathing can become uncontrolled, because the driven back emotions re-appear naturally and the patient can be submerged about it, will thus accelerate his breathing and will cause by fear a spasmophilic crisis . The objective of the rebirthor is to allow rebirthé to feel in full safety and in all conscience the body thoughts, emotions and/or feelings which emerge throughout the meeting - because activated by circular breathing - in order to allow that they are completely integrated.

Follows a space of calm deep where the patient breathes in a slow and soft way, while testing an impression of happiness, joy, peace, of relaxation, light, abolition of time, etc

Certain old alternatives of Rebirth sought the cathartic experiments, but the experiment and the control of the process of integration (as described by Phil Laut and Jim Léonard in " The rebirt, art to enjoy its vie" fully; - 1981 - MCL editions) watch which an effective meeting is always a pleasant and harmonious meeting.

There exists also another alternative of the technique: practiced in a heated swimming pool with 37 °C, or on the contrary in a cool water, the patient, supported by pars, starts in an instinctive and nonconscious way a fast breathing bringing the same effects.

The ultimate objective of the rebirthor is to lead the patient (rebirthé) at the stage to be able to manage only meetings of rebirth autonomous.

Physiological effects

Fast and circular breathing can induce a Spasmophilie, but it is not systematic. Spasmophilia occurs in a meeting of rebirth only when the person who is exerted there underwent strong traumatisms whose after-effects are not solved. The crisis occurs consequently of these traumatisms and a fast increase in the oxygen rate in blood associated with a loss even faster with carbonic gas, thus modifying its Alcalinité. The change of alkalinity then modifies the electric activity of the brain. A temporary reduction in the size of the brain, caused by the reduction in the blood volume which lost its carbonic gas, is also observed. The Blood-pressure decreases, the Pouls accelerates. The patient can hear a buzz, whistles, to have a visual impression of fog, feelings of tingling, swarmings and cramps muscular. Muscular cramps would first of all touch the muscles contracted in a chronic way and badly irrigated by blood, which would make it possible to the patient to locate in his body certain points of tension.

It would be this modification of the operation of the Cortex, decreasing its activity and its vigilance, which would make it possible to become aware, and to release the negative emotions engraved deeply in the structures of the limbic Système.

Interest in psychotherapy

Many approaches in Psychothérapie are based on the expression of the hidden negative emotions. These last, when that conscious and expressed freely, belong to the normal process of cure. It is when these emotions are driven back and are not normally lived that the traumatisms would induce pathologies. The rebirth is thus a technique, among others, making it possible to the patient to live these emotions and to thus start a process of Guérison.

Indication and counter-indications

The rebirth , and other techniques based on breathing, would be particularly effective to treat the respiratory disorders having an origin Psychosomatique such as the Asthme, the Allergie S and the Hyperventilation. It is also advised (by the experts of this technique) to treat the Insomnie, the Phobie S, the Boulimie, the Anorexia nervosa, the Asthénie, the Angoisse and the depression. It is also used, in certain cases, to deal with problems of dependence with drugs or alcohol.

On the other hand, it against is indicated, by the experts, for people having lived hallucinatory experiments or of is delirious spontaneous, like with the people supporting the poisons badly (alcohol, Marijuana, LSD, etc). The rebirth , which consists in reviving an experiment traumatisante, can also be extremely disorientating for certain little structured people who would have difficulty in support an intense upheaval emotional or who would be badly prepared there, then complicating more the situation.

Another danger of the rebirth rests on the feeling of optimism fideist (feeling which the faith can come to end from all) which accompanies that by interior relaxation and peace after “the primal explosion”. If this feeling is not balanced or badly not exploited by the rebirthor, the return to the reality which will follow undoubtedly can be painful, causing more difficulties than it does not solve any.

The rebirth is thus a technique which presents certain dangers. What returns imperative to try out it in company of an expert of confidence which has a good experiment (which will be able to intervene in the event of respiratory complication) and which has also a formation of Psychothérapeute or of Psychologue recognized (to help the patient with better preparing and better supporting the experiment traumatisante).

Controversies

The rebirth , accepted well during the Years 1980, is discussed more and more. First of all, a technique asserting rebirth caused the death of a ten year old child to the Colorado in 2000. Two therapeutists were condemned to sixteen years of prison following this business. The problem lies in the fact that the word “ rebirth ” was used for two completely different techniques, that accused here has nothing to do with the technique developed originally by Léonard Orr, and raises rather of a therapy of the attachment (in bond with the compromise Analyze and the Thérapie of Réparentage ). In 2002, American parliament with condemned this form of " rebirth" , considering that this therapeutic technique was dangerous and harmful and he encouraged all the American States to set up a law prohibiting it. details here

Moreover, it would be largely used by the Église of scientology, sectarian movement often denounced basing itself on an approach pseudo-scientist of the psychology, which does one of its principal practices of it. Finally, the recovery of this technique by various movements known as “Nouvel age” (movements so classified as sectarian by France) by associating a vocabulary that one could describe as metaphysics and mystic ( immersion in a breath of life , for example) largely contributes with it to discredit it near the public and of the scientists.

The therapeutic effects of the rebirth never were the subject of direct scientific studies.
