RealVideo

The RealVideo is a codec video owner developed by RealNetworks. The first version left in 1997 with RealPlayer 5 and the last in 2004 with RealPlayer 10.

RealVideo is used much on Internet in Streaming. RealVideo was historically created to deliver vidéos in streaming on Internet : so it is traditionally optimized for the low flows. RealProducer, the utility to create RealVideo flow, functions under several operating systems, in particular Windows, Linux, Mac OS. In addition to its capacity to produce streaming, it is able to create RealAudio and of RealVideo to format 3.0 or 4.0 (Identifiers FourCC RV30 and RV40). Version 4.0 of this codec clearly improved quality of the vidéos with high bancs.

The video files containing of the RealAudio and RealVideo often carry the extension .rm for the sound and .rmvb (RealMedia) for a file containing of the sound and the video. This codec can also be used with other containers, like Matroska and its extension .mkv .

The first two versions of RealVideo are based on the standard H.263 and of many third software, in particular of the free software, can deal with them, for example FFmpeg. On the other hand, the two most recent versions were developed by RealNetworks and the features of these formats are not public, they are based on a prototype of the standard H.264. Only the libraries of decoding owners (DLL) of this company can decode them. It is possible to obtain them through the official software (RealPlayer and Helix Player) or through redistributions not - authorized (Real Alternative). All architectures are not supported, in particular the environments 64 bits. The support of both last version are in the course of integrations in FFmpeg.
