ReCAPTCHA
reCAPTCHA is a system making profitable the capacities recognition of the human users mobilized by the tests Captcha, consequently to improve occasion the process of Numérisation of Livre S, where fail the systems of Optical character recognition (OCR).
The idea is to make useful a task which can seem unpleasing. The technique holds of the Crowdsourcing .
Concretely, compared to a usual process of authentification by Captcha, they are not one but two Mot S which is presented to the user. One of them is a usual Captcha, whose solution is consequently known in an unquestionable way; only the other is resulting from the digitalization of a book: it is that whose solution is dubious even unknown and which the user will help to solve.
The system leaves the principle that if the users solve usual Captcha correctly, then they also deciphered the unknown word correctly. Nevertheless, a word is regarded as really recognized only if several users checked it by obtaining the same result.
The words to be recognized result from digitalizations operated by Internet Files on old works belonging to the public domain. They are provided at the time of the requests by the Web site of the reCAPTCHA project, resulting from project CAPTCHA original, both set up by the data processing school of the Université Carnegie Mellon, in the American city of Pittsburgh. This is carried out by means of a API written in JavaScript, in which the waiter recalls reCAPTCHA after the request was subjected. The reCAPTCHA project proposes libraries for different computer programming languages in order to facilitate the process. The service is free, except for the users who would need a Band-width too high.
The goal of reCAPTCHA is the same one as that continued by Distributed Proofreaders, another project also aiming at validating the OCR by human operators, but in a conventional way, without having recourse to Captchas.
