Razorback (waiter ed2k)

General situation

Razorback is a Swiss association which had a waiter Edonkey/Emule of extremely popular P2P which brewed, to its apogee, more than 33% of the users of the network ed2k. It evolved on February 16th, 2004 to its version 2.0 and was followed in 2005 by his little brother named Razorback2.1. At the time of its seizure, the waiter supported the simultaneous load of a million and half of users.

In complement of the activities of waiter, association set up many other structures, like statistics on the whole of the network of P2P: ED2K history, a help with the diffusion of the legal contents of free music of Jamendo, legal distribution of software via the chain free remote loadings of Ratiatum of the diffusion of EBooks of rights, a support with the software of scientific research Folding@Home (with the TEAM p2p-community), and with a diffusion of commercial files sold under DRM.

Seizure by the Police force

The waiters, located at Zaventem close to Brussels, were seized on Tuesday, February 21, 2006 by the brigade anti-hacking of the Belgian federal police and the spokesperson of association was heard by the Swiss police force (association was based in Suisse). MPAA was pleased of closing to its initiative of this “infamous waiter”.

Evolution of the network

In spite of the stopping of the two waiters, the network EDonkey did not show real signs of weakness, and this mainly thanks to the assumption of responsibility of the users by other waiters, and use of the decentralized protocol resting on the algorithm Kademlia (which functions without dedicated waiter). One year after the stopping of the waiters, the network even progressed from 20% thus showing the uselessness of the action taken against Razorback, technical infrastructure which, point out it, did not contain any file in division.

Technical situation

Currently, the waiters Razorback 2.0 and 2.1 are except service. The razorback2.com site is given on feet since July 26th, 2006; on another waiter.

All waiters of Association, i.e.: the Web server of association, the waiters of upload of legal contents (jamendo and ratiatum) on the network ed2k, the waiter of safeguard as well as the two waiters Ed2k are always between the hands of the Police force.

In parallel, the network saw flowering of the new waiters taking again the name Razorback one speaks about 2.2,2.3,2.4 and 3.0 these waiters are not related to association Razorback, it is thus appropriate to remain careful vis-a-vis these false waiters not knowing which is behind this usurpation of name. The waiters Razorback 2.0 and 2.1 currently on line are also FALSE waiters.

Legal procedures carried out by Association

Since the stop from the Razorback2.0 waiters and 2.1, association is placed as a defendant of individual freedoms and the private life of the Net surfers. In April 2007, it deposited a complaint against the security firm Logistep AG located in Switzerland for violation of the data law and prepares to take other similar actions in Switzerland as in Europe. On this subject, a press release was posted on the site of Association.
