Raymond de Peñafort
Saint Raymond de Peñafort or Penyafort as a Catalan, born with Villafranca de Benades, close to Barcelona, between 1175 (what makes it die centenary) and 1180, and died in 1275, is a preaching friar (Dominican) known for his role in the Inquisition with the Middle Ages.
He follows studies to the Université of Barcelona, then share to improve in Droit to the Université of Bologna, where he is made doctor in Canon law and Civil law. From 1195 to 1210, he teaches the canon law. In 1210, it leaves to teach with Bologna, where it remains until 1222, occupying three years the pulpit of canon law. On its return to Barcelona in 1222, it enters the order of the Preaching friars.
He is the confessor of the king king d' Aragon Jacques I {{er}}. Contacted by saint Pierre Nolasque, it obtains the support of the king for the foundation of the order of Notre-Dame of Mercy for the repurchase of the Christians removed by the Moslems.
It is destined for Rome by the pope Gregoire IX in 1230, to take part in the coding of the canon law. The various sources of the canon law, scattered before in multiple works, are organized in a coherent unit, remained a reference until coding in 1917. It compiles more particularly the Decretales Gregorii , second book of the Corpus Iuris canonici . These Décrétale S makes formal prohibition with laic be involved in the designation of the bishop S. It remains in liaison with Jacques Ier, and pushes it to found the court of the Enquiry in Aragon (1232).
Of return in Spain, it becomes there general Maître of Dominican the in 1238, load which it gives up in 1240. In 1242, it publishes the first handbook of the Enquiry.
It obtains that the Sunday days before and feastdays are non-working.
He dies on January 7th, 1275, and is canonized by Clément VIII in 1601.
He is patron saint of the lawyers in canon law. Its festival (not-obligatory) is on January 7th.
