Raymond Réthoré (1901-1986) is a politician several times elected appointed of Charente
Biography
He was born on June 4th 1901 with Liré in the Maine-et-Loire.He settles in Charente in 1924, and with his Alphonse brother who devotes his life to the study of ancient and traditional architecture. Thanks to the generosity of an uncle, they buy the castle of the Drapery and its field of 600 ha to Magnac-Lavalette.
They make fortune in the sale of machines for steam pressing. However, at the time of the electoral campaigns he declares owner farmer.
He becomes the friend of the general de Gaulle and accompanies it at the time of its voyages in Russia.
The two brothers decide to undertake the construction of Charente-native Versailles which will never be finished. The Castle of Drapery then become the insane dream of the Réthoré brothers. The small manor of the XIXe century, the primitive residence, is located at the extreme left of the frontage of the current building, 220 meters length frontage. The construction of the building continues until 1970 dates to which work is stopped fault of means.
All the parts of this castle of the XIXe century are decorated of a decoration sumptuous, movable, paintings, collections of sculptures. Raymond Réthoré travels and pays from abroad paintings, marbles, woodworks, statues, glosses, skirting, and other treasures. And even, a time, an Italian restorer is in load of the collections.
They manage to bequeath the castle to the department, neither with the National Assembly, nor at the town of Angouleme, which however accepts 2068 volumes of the library, which include/understand in particular rare books concerning architecture. Their heir, without family ties besides, will sell the collections to face the debts. An auction takes place in 1987.
The south-western frontage of the castle and all the interior decorations designed by the Réthoré brothers are registered with the additional inventory of the Historic buildings since 1988. (the room of Béruges, the central living room, the living room of Vernet, the hall, the Gallery of Mahogany tree, the large Gallery of Azujelos, the Gallery of Vernet, the office of Raymond Réthoré, the living room and the library and rooms of the two brothers on the first floor) It is surrounded by about fifty hectares of wood with rare vegetable gasolines brought back by Raymond Réthoré at the time of his voyages, planted with an aim of creating a arboretum.
