Raymond Leyris
Raymond Leyris , called Sheik Raymond (July 27th, 1912 - June 22nd, 1961 with Constantine) is an Algerian musician of music Malouf (or arabo-Andalusian). Player virtuoso of Oud, it is recognized very quickly like a Master of the arabo-Andalusian music, which is worth the name of sheik to him (main).
Of Jewish father originating in Batna and French mother, it is abandoned during the First World War. It will be adopted by a very poor Jewish family.
It records about thirty albums between 1956 and 1961, in addition to the individual ones. In its orchestra, the future Enrico Macias makes its beginnings and which will marry his/her Suzy daughter later.
He is assassinated of a ball in the nape of the neck on June 22nd, 1961 whereas he makes his races with the Souk of Constantine, Place Slave trader.
Symbol of the peaceful coexistance between the Pied-noir Jews, Moslems and the from France, its death is perceived by the Jewish community like the last sign of impossibility of remaining in Algeria and mark the beginning of an emigration towards France and the State of Israel.
