Raymond IV of Toulouse
Raymond IV (VI) of Toulouse , known as Raymond of Saint-Gilles , count de Toulouse and of of Tripoli ( Raymond Ier ), was born with Toulouse in 1042. He is the son of the count de Toulouse Pons and of Almodis of Walk.
According to the traditional genealogy of the counts de Toulouse made by the Benedictines in the General History of Languedoc , it would be Raymond IV , but critical studies established that two counts of the first name of Raymond had been omitted. He would be thus Raymond (VI)
At the end of the years 1070, it takes the party of the archbishop of Arles Aicard against the count of Provence and the pope.
One finds it as of 1087 in Spain where it fights against the Moors. It succeeds in 1088 his Guillaume brother, who sells the county to him. Taking part in the First Crusade, of which it orders one of the four armies, that which gains Constantinople by terrestrial way, it had there the appearance of a military chief beside the legate, spiritual leader and theoretically policy.
Raymond of Saint-Gilles is distinguished as of the beginning while refusing in Constantinople to lend homage to the emperor. He is then of all the engagements, in particular at the time of the victory of Dorylée that the crusaders carry on the Turks, until the catch of Jerusalem, where he must leave the first role to Godefroy de Bouillon.
The election for the Couronne of Jerusalem gives the preference to Godefroy de Bouillon with the detriment of Raymond IV. Depity, it goes up towards Lebanon where it runs up against the interests of Bohémond de Tarente, then on Constantinople. Alexis Commène entrusts to him a crusade of reinforcement (1101) which is made decimate by the Turks during the crossing of Anatolia. He draws some with large pains and limit his sights on the emirate of Tripoli. He vainly tries to take the city and dies during the seat the February 28th 1105. Bertrand of the Piglets, gentleman of Provence of the famous dynasty of Provence Of the Piglets sign then its will.
His third wife Elvire de Castille follows it to the Crusade. She gives rise to it a son, baptized for that Alphonse the Jordan.
