Controversies
Charge of Anti-semitism
October 3rd, 1980, following the attack anti-semite of the street Copernic, Raymond Barre, then Prime Minister, shocks the opinion while declaring awkwardly on TF1: “ This odious attack which wanted to strike the Jews being in this synagog and which struck of the innocent French who crossed the street Copernic ”. Its remarks of October 8th, 1980 to the National Assembly, ensuring her “Jewish compatriots” of the “sympathy of the whole of the nation”, will not erase Malayan not left it by its preceding sentence.February 20th, 2007, during an interview on France Culture diffused on March 1st, 2007, it reconsiders this business: It was of the French who circulated in the street and who are mown because one wants to make jump a synagog. Then, those which wanted to be caught some to the Jews, they could have made jump the synagog and the Jews. But at all, they make a blind attack and has there three French, nonJewish, it is a reality, not Jews. And that does not want to say that the Jews, them are not French . It estimates that this business was “ a campaign made by the Lobby Jewish related to the left ”, affirming to consider “ that the Jewish lobby - not only in what concerns to me - is able to assemble operations which are unworthy and I make a point of saying it publicly. ”
In the same interview, Raymond Barre defends her former minister Maurice Papon, deceased three days front, “ a Scapegoat ” according to him. He declares that “ Papon was a senior civil servant of the State which especially paid for Charonne. The remainder is an alibi. ” According to Raymond Barre, for the French civils servant, it was necessary for all “ to make function France ”, the collaboration of State under Vichy was not a reason sufficient to resign: “ One resigns when it is really about a major national interest. ”; “ they tried after a fashion to limit this drama which was the persecution of the Jews ”. It estimates moreover that Bruno Gollnisch, appointed European FN, of which it blames the remarks (the frontist had just been condemned for Négationnisme), is in addition “ a good city council man, a man well ”
This interview was highly criticized by the CRIF, which was declared “scandalized” and by Claude Lanzmann, which shows Raymond Barre of Antisémitisme. This last answers these critics the same day, on RTL, in the emission “the Famous persons”: “There is one clicks which since 1979 continues me to reveal me anti-semite. ”
These declarations are condemned in the press, by several intellectuals and associations, as well as the majority of the political parties. The 11 March 2007, in a maintenance with the daily newspaper Parisian the , Raymond Barre declares “ made indignant and saddened ” by the charges of anti-semitism of which it is the object. Informant that “ the anti-semitism and racism are contrary with be personal convictions ”, it denounces a “ Jewish lobby of left ” which would bait against him “ since more than thirty years ”.

The president of the University of the Meeting, Serge Svizzero, proposed to him to change the name of the university into his honor. The interested party would have declared that it “is not opposed there on the principle” considering his origins and attachments with the Meeting. Some were surprised by this decision because in 1979, then Prime Minister, he had refused that the university center of the Meeting, attached to the Université of Aix-Marseilles, becomes a true university.
