Ray Anthony
Ray Anthony (Raymond Antonini) is a Trompettiste and Leader of American Jazz born with Bentleyville (Ohio) the January 20th 1922.
Biography
Raymond Antonini is born in 1922, with Bentleyville. Its family is established with Cleveland (Ohio). There, at the 5 years age, it starts to learn the trumpet.
In 1938, it begins its career in the orcehstre of Al Donahue. From November 1940 at July 1941, he is member of the Big band of Glenn Miller. After six months in the orchestra Jimmy Dorsey, it joined in 1942, during the Second world war, a dance band of Navy based in the Pacifique that it directs until 1946.
In 1946, life income civil, it forms its own orchestra under the aegis of the firm Capitol. This formation is more one dance band that a reality big band of jazz. One finds however there jazzmen like Conte Candoli, Plas Johnson, Conrad Gozzo, Mel Lewis, Alvin Stoller. The orchestra knows, until fine the end of the year 1950, a great business success. Between 1946 and 1960, the orchestra records a hundred LP and more than 500 “individual”. Resumptions of topics like Dance hall in the dark , Peter Gunn, , Dragnet , The Bunny Hop, Harbor Lights become, at the time, of the tubes. Ray Anthony and its orchestra appear in ten Hollywood films (of which “ Papa long legs ” aves Fred Astaire in 1955). They work also much for television (Anthony animates various regular shows for the chains ABC then CBS).
In the years 1960, the golden age of the Big band S being finished, Ray Anthony occurs in sextet accompanying a female vocal duet. Its spectacle, the “ Bookend Re-examined ”, is with the poster during several year with Las Vegas before being presented at the time of international rounds. In 1976, Ray Anthony founds his own recording company, “ Space Records”.
In the years 1980, it reforms a big band which occurs primarily in the colleges and universities. This formation is today still in activity.
Style
As trumpet player, Ray Anthony plays in a style rather close to that of Harry James. The music of its orchestra holds more instrumental variety that jazz, but one can find within his multiple recordings of very pleasant surprised.
