Ravenne is a Italian city of the Province of Ravenne in Emilie-Romagna.

History of Ravenne

Ravenne was rested by a colony of Thessalie NS, and was then occupied by the Étrusques, the Sabins, the Gaulois Sénonais. It fell to the capacity from the Romains the year 234 av. J. - C, and became municipal city.

Being located on the edge even sea under the Roman Empire until the beginning of the the Middle Ages, it was an important port.

With the turning of the Antiquity and the Middle Ages, Ravenne became a city of first importance. In 404, during the reign of Honorius, it was high with the row of capital of the Roman Empire of Occident, because of its favorable situation: surrounded by marshy zones, it was relative with the shelter of the terrestrial attacks of the barbarians, and its port of Classis , on the Adriatique, put it in easy communication with Constantinople. The city continued to be the center of the Western Empire until the fall of this one in 476. It then became the capital of the kingdom of Odoacre, then starting from 493 that of the kingdom of the Ostrogoths, under Théodoric Large the, which included the Italy, the Gaulle cisalpine, the Dalmatie and the Sicily. In 540, under the reign of Justinien I {{er}}, Ravenne was conquered by the Byzantine general Bélisaire; it was then reconquered by the ostrogoths before being again begun again by the Byzantine general Narsès in 552.

It is to counter the danger born of the invasion of the Lombards in Italy of north starting from 568, that Ravenne became the seat of the Exarchat, per decision of the emperor Maurice ( cf Exarchat de Ravenne ). The concentration of all the civil capacities and soldiers between the hands of exarque, staff representative of the Byzantine emperor could not, in the long run, prevent the emancipation of the territories of Italy of north with respect to the imperial capacity.

It was taken into 752 by Astolfe, king of the Lombards. Two years after, Pépin the Brief removed it to him and gave it to the the Holy See.

With the Middle Ages, Ravenne recovered for some time its freedom, but it was subjected soon by Bologna, then by Venice in 1440. After the battle of Agnadel in 1509, it was restored with the pope and became the capital of the Romagna. In l512, the French, ordered by Gaston de Foix, gained there over the Spaniards and the troops of the pope Jules II a bright victory; but Gaston perishes there.

The archbishop of Ravenne was in the past primacy of Exarchat and claimed to compete with the pope; but, in a council held into 679, it was obliged to give up publicly its claims with independence.

Ravenne belonged to the kingdom of Italy starting from 1861.
