Rauraques

The Rauraques (in Latin: Rauraci ) is people Celte, which occupied the southernmost part of the province of Germanic 1st.

It had as terminals:

  • in the west: the the Vosges and chains it which connects them to the the septentrional Jura,
  • in the south: the mount Vocetius (the Bözberg) to the confluence of the Aar and the the Rhine,
  • in the east: the Rhine,
  • in north: country of the Triboques,

This territory corresponds nowadays to most of the Département of Haut-Rhin, the Canton of Basle and the part of those of Argovie, of Soleure, the Canton of the Jura and Bern, which is located at the west of the Swiss Jura.

Their principal cities were Augusta Raurica (Augst), Basilia (Basle), and Argenluaria (Artzenheim).

In 1792, part of old évêché of Basle was proclaimed independent under the name of République Rauracienne.
