Rashied Ali

Rashied Ali , born Robert Patterson , is a Batteur of American Jazz , born with Philadelphia (Pennsylvania) on July 1st 1935.

He is the brother of the beater Muhammad Ali (Raymond Patterson).

Biography

After having studied with the " Granoff School off Music" , II begins in orchestras from Rhythm and blues. In 1953, it forms its own group and starts to play with musician of Hard bop (Lee Morgan, Jimmy Smith,…). He knows difficult years and is even obliged to exert for a time the trade of taxi driver.

In 1963, it meets the saxophonist Pharoah Sanders. It occurs with many musicians of Free jazz (Don Cherry, Paul Bley, Bill Dixon, archie Shepp, Marion Brown, Sun Ra,…) but also with the veteran of the jazz New Orleans Earl Hines. One can also hear it in groups of Rock.

On the councils of Sunny Murray, it is engaged like Percussionniste by the Saxophoniste John Coltrane to assist the beater Elvin Jones. It replaces this last and remains with Coltrane until 1967, date of died of the saxophonist.

Since, one could hear it with, enter others, Alice Coltrane, Sony Rollins, Jackie McLean, Alan Shorter, Gary Bartz, McCoy Tyner, George Adams, Frank Lowe, Sony Fortune and, during a few years in his own trio of electronic funk-rock'n'roll (founded in 1986, with Marc Bogaerts and Amin Ali).

In 1972, it created a transitory recording company, “Survival Records”. From 1973 to 1979, it managed a club-restaurant, the “ Studio 77 ” (alias “ Ali' S Alley ”).
