Raphaël Salem
Raphaël Salem , born on November 7th, 1898 with Salonique, dead on June 20th, 1963 with Paris, was a mathematician who studied in particular the connections between the Fourier series and the Théorie of the numbers. He played a big role in the development of the Analyze of Fourier in France.
Born in Greece, it arrives at the 15 years age to Paris, where it attended the Lycée Condorcet. It begins then studies with the Faculty of Law and obtains the license in 1919. But in parallel, it is impassioned for mathematics in company of Jacques Hadamard, and obtains the same year a science degree with the Sorbonne. He forsakes his studies of right then and, in 1921, he is graduate Central École. He begins then a long career (17 years) in the Bank, but its interest for research in mathematics remains also sharp. It publishes before war a series of articles on Fourier series. On the initiative of professor Arnaud Denjoy, Salem supports a thesis in mathematics, and obtains its doctorate in 1940. During the war, it is sent in England as assistant of Jean Monnet. Demobilized, it joined its family left to Canada, then settles with Cambridge in the Massachusetts where it can be again devoted to its passion. He is engaged with MIT, initially like lecturer in 1941, then climbs the levels to the row of full professor in 1950. He ends up returning to France, initially with the Université of Caen then as professor in Sorbonne in 1955.
Its widow created a scientific price which bears its name, the Prix Salem, decreed each year with a mathematician.
