Raphaël Babet

Born on June 27th 1894 with Saint-Pierre and deceased on August 30th 1957 with Saint-Joseph, Raphaël Jean-Baptiste Benjamin Babet is a Politician of the island of the Réunion which was Député of 1946 to its death.

It passes to be at the origin of the equipment and the modernization of the downtown area of the commune of Saint-Joseph as from 1947.

It is especially known to have initiated the creation project of a new Ville by of Réunionnais with Madagascar. This project was actually initiated as from 1953 and is known locally under the name of Sakay. The small town developed within its framework until in 1977 was named Babetville in its homage.

The church of Saint-Pierre bears his name, one of the oldest churches of the island of the meeting, built at the end of XVIIIe. century. It recently was the object of work of rehabilitation, aiming at finding the simplicity of interior volumes and the beauty of the frame preserved very well, and clarified at the time of this work.
