Raoul of Lorraine
Raoul of Lorraine , known as Valiant the , born in 1320, died in 1346, was duke of Lorraine of 1328 with 1346. It was wire of the duke Ferry IV and Elisabeth of Austria.
Biography
He nine years old with died of his father, and his/her mother was regent of the duchy until in 1334.In 1337, the count Henri IV of Bar always refused to lend homage for certain seigniories to him, and Raoul devastated the surroundings of Pont-à-Mousson. In reprisals, Henri devastated the west of the duchy, and Raoul attacked Barrois. One needed the intervention of the king de France Philippe VI of Valois to put an end to the war.
The second marriage of Raoul had reinforced the links with the kingdom of France and Raoul intervened at the sides of king de France who was to deal with Edouard III. He sent troops to help Philippe to break the seat of Tournai.
Benefitting from a truce between the two kingdoms, it helped the king de Castille Alphonse XI to fight the Moslem kingdom of Grenade and illustrated with the battle of Gibraltar the November 3rd 1340.
Income in France, it helps his/her brother-in-law Charles of Blois in the War of succession of Brittany.
In 1341, it creates the " Confrairie of Marchands" at the origin of current the Chamber of commerce and industry of the Murder-and-Moselle.
It is killed with the Bataille of Crécy, the August 25th 1346.
Marriages and children
He married in first weddings with Pont-à-Mousson in 1329 Aliénor de Bar († 1332), girl of Edouard I {{er}}, count de Bar and of Marie of Burgundy, but did not have children of this first marriage.Widower, it remarie in 1334 with Marie de Châtillon (1323 † 1380) girl of Guy I {{er}} of Châtillon, count de Blois and of Chartres, and Marguerite de Valois, sister of the king Philippe VI. They had:
- two girls twin, born and dead in 1343.
- Jean Ier (1346 † 1390), duke of Lorraine
