Raoul Vaneigem
Raoul Vaneigem , born with Stinginesses (Hainaut, Belgium) the March 21st 1934, is a writer, revolutionist, medievist and Belgian philosopher . It followed studies of Romance philology to ULB of 1952 to 1956 and writes a report on Isidore Ducasse, count of Lautréamont. Via Attila Kotanyi, it was put in contact with Guy Debord, and it took an active part in the Internationale situationnist of 1961 with 1970, inviting the youth of the time “to enjoy without obstacle”. It contributes in an important way to the review that this group published.
One of its most famous works Treated good manners with the use of the young generations, appeared in 1967, falls under the project of the situationnists to reverse the social order dominating. It expresses a radical criticism of the modern world there by denouncing its illusions there, the survival which these illusions produce, and dispute distorts it which results from this, and invites to a “inversion of prospect”, to pass from the constraint to creation. A little later in the book of the pleasures , appeared in 1979, it invites the alive ones with a “pleasure without obstacle”, and to finish some once and for all with a commercial company which “did not work anything of human if it is not the parodic mould which was used for propagating it everywhere”.
Recognized Medievist, his critic of the world on the heresies ( the Heresies , editions Which do I know will refer? , 1994) and resistance to the Christianity, in which he sees “the signs of a civilization to come, either founded on the alienation of work, the capacity and the profit, but on the creativity, the pleasure and the exemption from payment”; critical that one finds until in his invaluable collaboration with the Encyclopedia Universalis . Author less inspired of directions for use of the revolution, published under the pseudo one of Ratgeb, Of the wild strike to generalized self-management in 1974. The work of Vaneigem is divided into two tendencies, one, theoretical, which announces a Michel Onfray, and which finds its justification in the idea that “the revolution is not any more in the refusal of survival, but in a pleasure of oneself that all entreats to prohibit (...)” ( the book of the pleasures , p. 9).
This point of view, which points out a kind of epicureanism, was at the origin of its resignation of the IS, in November 1970, pushed by the other members of this organization, of which Debord, which reproached him its desistance in full period from disorders and occupations from the Sorbonne in 1968; and the other, calling upon a scholarship of researcher, tries to show that the spirit of freedom and the pleasure meets as of the Early middle ages, in the movements of the Free-Spirit, that it distinguishes, initially, of the heresies, in which it saw “subsidiary companies of orthodoxy”, ( the movement of the Free-Spirit, 1986), but reconsidering this distinction by writing an important book on “the heresies, of the origins at the XVIIIe century”, the evocative title of resistance to Christianity , published in 1993.
Its last contribution, in January 2005 is an important foreword with the republication of the Mouvement of the free-spirit, in which it invites “to achieve the going beyond of the religion and its main maidservant”.
