Raoul Ier de Vermandois

Raoul Ier of Vermandois , known as Valiant the or One-eyed the , known also under the name of Raoul de Crépy , born in 1085, dead the October 14th 1152, count de Vermandois and of Valois (1102-1152), wire of Hugues Ier Large the, count de Vermandois and of Valois, and Adelaide de Vermandois

Towards 1120, it marries in first weddings Éléonore of Blois, girl of Etienne II of Blois and Adèle of England and a:

  • Hugues II (1127-1212), count de Vermandois and of Valois.

It supports the kings Louis VI the Large and Louis VII the young person against the rebellious barons with the royal authority. During the catch of the castle of Livry in 1129, it loses an eye. The following year, with the seat of Coucy, it wounds mortally Thomas de Marle, lord de Coucy, that one even which had killed his/her brother Henri (1091-1130), lord of Chaumont-in-Vexin.

Devoted to the crown, Louis VII proposes the sister of his wife to him Aliénor of Aquitaine, Pétronille of Aquitaine (v. 1125 † 1153). To be able to marry it, Raoul repudiates in 1142 his first Éléonore wife of Blois. The forsaken wife then complains near her brother Thibaut IV, count de Blois and of Champagne, which rebels in its turn against the king of France. The pope Innocent II intervenes by cancelling this marriage and excommunicates the new husbands as well as the bishops who agree to bless their union.

Of Pétronille of Aquitaine (v. 1125 † 1153), girl of Guillaume X of Aquitaine and sister of Aliénor of Aquitaine, it a:

  • Elisabeth (1143-1183), countess of Vermandois and Valois, married to Philippe of Alsace, count de Flandre
  • Raoul II (1145-1167), count de Vermandois and of Valois

During the absence of Louis VII party for the Second crusade, in 1145, Raoul remains in France in the capacity as Régent of the kingdom with Suger. After the return of Louis VII, Raoul divorces in 1151 Pétronille, his second épouse.
It remarie in 1152 with Laurette of Alsace (v. 1120 † 1175), girl of Thierry of Alsace, count de Flandre, and a:
