Raoul III of Tosny

Raoul III of Tosny († v. 1126), lord of Conches-in-Ouche, is a Anglo-Norman baron of the Famille of Tosny

Biography

In the conflict which opposes two surviving wire of William the Conqueror, Raoul III chooses to give his support for the junior, Henri I {{er}} Beauclerc, recent King d' Angleterre. To died of his father in 1102, it crosses the English Channel to collect the paternal heritage in England. The rallying with Henri initially enables him to obtain a good match: he marries Adelise, the girl and heiress of the Anglo-Saxon count Waltheof de Northumbrie.

Since 1104, Raoul accompanies Henri in his countryside by conquest of Normandy. Countryside which ends, after the Bataille of Tinchebray (1106), with the imprisonment of the duke Robert Courteheuse and with his replacement by the King d' Angleterre. England and Normandy is found under the same Master as at the time of William the Conqueror. The support of the lord of Tosny is confirmed at the time of the revolt of the barons of Eastern Normandy against Henri Ier in 1118-1119. Raoul does not rejoin the rebels. However, if one follows the account of Orderic Vital, its attitude appears floating. The chief of the revolted barons, Amaury III of Montfort, explains to the king Louis VI of France which should be attacked Normandy by south-east because Raoul III will help them. Amaury, which is the uncle of the lord of Tosny, ensures that the baron will join the royal troops with his clean vassal and will open his four fortresses: Conches, Acquigny, Doors, Tosny. With the autumn 1119, Louis VI decides to intervene but the following events show that Raoul III does not support the French, as the lord of Montfort hoped for it. However, it is guessed that Raoul is not a sure support. Raoul II of Gaël, faithful of king d' Angleterre, indeed suspects it of wanting to capture it. On the opinion of Henri I {{er}}, it concedes Bridge-Saint-Pierre to him and the Valley of Pîtres to make sure of its fidelity.

In 1123-1124, Amaury de Montfort revolts again against the king. Raoul III remains faithful.
