History

The origin of Ranville goes back to the Antiquité. The Roman way connecting Pont-Audemer and Bayeux passed on the commune; the travellers were to borrow a vat from Ranville in order to join the port of Bénouville and to carry on their road. It is only in the middle of 19th that this vat was replaced by a bridge-turning.

An agricultural domain developed on the commune and its name (" gave him; Ran-" , Germanic word, associated with " - ville" of Latin Villa referring to a rural field). During centuries, several activities are développérent:

  • extraction of the Pierre of Caen which was then conveyed, towards the England in particular, by the Orne (the street of the careers with Longueval points out this past),
  • the river activities (sandmen and fishermen) with Longueval which périclitèrent with the opening of the Canal of Caen to the sea,
  • agriculture, in particular on the marshes drained with 19th-20th.

The commune was burst between several more or less gathered hamlets:

  • the New Borough,
  • the Bottom of Ranville,
  • Hom,
  • the Mill,
  • Mariquet,
  • Longueville,
  • Longueval.

In 1860, Ranvillais decided to demolish their church, considered to be decayed and too exigue. It preserved only the bell-tower of 11th-12th which subist still today beside the new church.

Ranville was the first village of France released on June 6th, 1944 by the 13th battalion parachutist (13th Parachute Battalion) ordered by the Lieutenant-colonel Peter Luard.
