Ranma ½

Summary

Beginning

The history starts in the family Tendô , which resides at Nerima (suburbs of Tokyo) Genma Saotome and her son Ranma family friends having to come to see them. The fathers of the two families arranged the marriage of Ranma with one of the three Tendô girls for a very long time, in order to link their two schools of martial arts and to continue the exploitation of the dojo family Tendô.

All would go for best if Mr. Saotome did not pass his life in the form of a Panda, and that Ranma Saotome did not alternate between the forms of a nice very gifted high-school pupil in martial arts and of one charming young girl, equipped with almost as much physical force than its version man, following a fall in the sources of China at the time of their drive.

Ranma has a blue fear of the cats and when Shampoo, one of its many promised in marriage, is transformed into she-cat, it is paralyzed of fear and cannot approach some. Ranma became very extremely in martial arts thanks to Genma which very learned to him.

The double appearance of Ranma, as well as the other transformations human or in animal of several other protagonists constitute the source of many misunderstandings and dramatic turns of events, with the liking of the exposures to cool water (transformation) or heat (return to the normal). It results from them comic suspense and effects with a frantic rate, the more so as the transformations are a ashamed secrecy for all, known of a small circle of close friends, who can use about it comiquement (like when the sister of Akane, Nabiki sells photographs of Ranma-girl in Kunô, without him to say of course that it is about transformed Ranma.)

History with the wire of the volumes

Ranma and the junior by the family Tendô, her been engaged Akane (of a force practically comparable with that of Ranma), while disputing and while finding herself perpetually, will face much problems, such as:

competitions in love of the characters. Ranma trails three others been engaged important: Shampoo, the Chinese Amazon which wants to marry it because it overcame it in duel, and which is transformed into cat whereas Ranma has a phobia of the cats; Ukyô, the friend of childhood that Genma had promised in marriage in a five years old Ranma; Kodachi, insane well the too gifted one in herb trade for the wellbeing of its entourage… Ranma trails also a promised in marriage ! Tatewaki Kunô, a mythomaniac kendoka in love with Ranma girl (which it calls “the girl with the plait”, osage No onna ) and incompetent to include/understand his curse. On its side, Akane out of drag mainly two: same Tatewaki Kunô, which can never decide between the love (virtual) of Akane and that (quite as virtual) of the girl to the plait; Ryôga, a friend of childhood of Ranma as timid as rancorous towards Ranma.

of the invading adults: Cologne, the great-grandmother of Shampoo which supports the latter in its company; Happôsai, the perverse old man and incidentally the Master of the father of Ranma and that of Akane, whose favorite pastime is to fly of the female underclothing. These deux-là is large Masters in martial arts and never with court of odd techniques, vicious tricks and other low blows.

Ranma and Akane is as obstinate and proud one as the other, and they do not take gloves. The series the watch as cohabiting peacefully as long as the subject of engagement is tackled neither of near nor by far. But when that arrives, that generally ends in Akane furious and Ranma embedded in the wall.

of the various and varied enemies. As the history passes, the origins of their adversaries diversify considerably and leave the framework of the colleges of Nerima and the surroundings.

In any case, the life of Ranma and Akane is perilous, between the rivals and the jealous girls. With the wire of time, Ranma and Akane are discovered and approach, while being run away mutually very often.

The series somewhat changes tone after the arrival of the mother of Ranma (volume 22, is approximately half of original work and the oddment TV). The comic good olds stories based on delirious martial arts are spaced to leave a little more place to the development of the characters. They is as from there as the characters with the clearly fantastic capacities multiply, until the apotheosis which is the end, a massive history of two volumes which passes by tons more varied than usually.

Presentations

Work presents primarily three faces:

a comedy: the heroes evolve/move in a context of competition high-school girl around the beauty and force, with like pretext and backdrop the most delirious martial arts: martial kitchen, ceremony of the martial, eurhythmics martial, martial noodle delivery… The comic aspect is primarily based on misunderstandings vaudevillesques and characters with through studied.

the discovery of the love and the friendship by young people: even if they fight all the time, the heroes, all teenagers, learn how to respect themselves, to even like. But youth and the ambition to be the best often scramble these relations.

the conflict of the generations and mentalities: it is still a topic very current in Japan. The old generations still in activity knew Japan much more traditionalist that today, while the young generations aspire to another thing. Ranma ½ presents of this conflict a very distinct face: the old ones are either of the dead loads (Soun, Genma), or of the parasites and the sources of problems (Happôsai, Cologne); they are always the young people who must fight to solve all the problems. In spite of that, the respect of the old generations remains quite present.

Main characters

Ranma Saotome (Ranma Vincent)

Ranma practices martial arts, with his/her father for Master. It is rather proud and seems to appreciate that it is noticed (finally sometimes). Since it fell into one from the 109 cursed sources, it is transformed into girl in contact with cool water, a situation difficult to support being given the education macho which it received!

It is found been engaged with Akane following the promise that were made their fathers. This situation strongly displeases in Ranma, which at the head has only its performances in martial arts and the search for a remedy against its curse. And nothing to arrange its relations with Akane leaves the bad foot… Nevertheless, it tests feelings for it even if he does not dare to acknowledge it.

Ranma is presented in the series like a warrior to the potential extraordinary, able to assimilate practically any technique in record time. It is called the king of dodging, because its school (the Saotome school of the combat any category) supports the speed and the aerial combat (jumps).

Akane Tendô (Adeline Galant)

Akane is promised in marriage of Ranma (see the cause quoted previously). Before the arrival of this last, she enjoyed an unquestionable reputation: a pretty girl and at the same time fighting exceptionally gifted, the phantasm of much of boys of the college. But after the arrival of Ranma and other heroes, it is relegated to the row of good last.

Just like Ranma, the character of Akane is built on contradictions. But where Ranma is focused of all its being on martial arts, sacrificing the other aspects of its life, Akane is closer to a teenager " normale". She is good pupil and often leaves with her friends. But martial arts are in the middle of its life and it cannot be prevented from being jealous of the innate talent of promised in marriage sound.

Akane is shown like a girl in the middle of gold, sensitive and more romantic than it lets it appear. But it has also an execrable character and a tendency to always including/understanding worse manner the misunderstandings whose Ranma is regularly victim. It is in fact a jealous girl.

Besides its feelings for Ranma are obvious, it has less evil than him to acknowledge them, but its jealousy always prevents it to express it.

The culinary talents of Akane are execrable, but only Ranma has courage and honesty to say to him opposite its kitchen is inedible. All that brings to him, it is that Akane takes it for guinea-pig when it tries to improve.

Ryôga Hibiki (Roland)

The competition of Ryôga and Ranma goes up at the time where they were together with the college. Ranma was always fastest to adapt thrown food grazes about it with the pupils with the canteen. To be avenged, small Ryôga defied Ranma in duel. But the direction of the legendary orientation of Hibiki made its work, and Ryôga was lost in the hundred meters which separated its house from the waste ground where the duel was to take place. After three days of waiting, Ranma ends up leaving. Ryôga him wants some not to have always waited one day more.

But in fact, this competition would be perhaps extinct of itself if Ryôga had not sought to follow Ranma to China. Just after being fallen in the source from the drowned young girl, Ranma (girl), furious, his/her father pursued to be avenged. She hustled Ryôga without seeing it and this last fell into the cursed source from the drowned pig. For this moment, Ryôga has been transformed into black piglet as soon as it comes into contact with cool water.

This small pig becomes the pet of Akane. She baptizes it P-chan (or small chip in French version). It is an inexhaustible source of arguments between Ranma and Akane. Indeed, Ranma, feeling responsible for the curse of Ryôga, swore anything to reveal with anybody. But just after Ryôga was made adopt as P-chan and thus sleeps in the bed of Akane. Ranma, prisoner of its promise, can nothing say to Akane, then it tries to uncover it indirectly. What Akane never fails to interpret of through.

Naive and nice, but so dark boy in the depressive tendencies, Ryôga falls in love with Akane, confusing love and affection towards an pet. He is probably one of the best friends of Ranma, even if their competition often dissimulates it, and the only adversary worthy of him.

Shampoo (Bamboo)

It is during its drive in China that Ranma meets for the first Shampoo time. Of passage in the village of Nyuchezu (Amazones Chinese), a tribe of very gifted women for martial arts, Ranma (in its female form) eats the price of a contest of martial arts, price which was to return in Shampoo. To regulate the litigation, Ranma defies it and gains the combat. Shampoo gives him the kiss of death then, swearing thus that it will continue Ranma until it killed it.

Coldly arrived at Japan, Shampoo attacks Ranma in its female form then in its male form. Ranma boy gains and Shampoo then must, according to the principles of its tribe, to marry it. When she discovers finally that Ranma girl and Ranma boy are the same person, she will set out again for China.

She will return thereafter, after having undergone an intensive drive with her large mother, Cologne, which will have been worth to him to be fallen she also in a malefic source, that of the cat. A splendid source of complications, since Ranma is victim of an incredible phobia of the cats.

Before as after this second return, it continues Ranma of its assiduities and all is good to eliminate competition (others been engaged) and/or to subject Ranma: shameless seduction, poison, various potions, duels, handling. Its Cologne great-grandmother encourages there besides largely.

As almost any Chinese character of the series, it bears a name of cosmetic: Xian Pu which decides almost like Shampoo.

Foam (Mathias/Thomas)

He considers Ranma as his rival because Shampoo and his glasses it removes likes to like him (what causes grinds misunderstandings because it is so short-sighted that it can confuse an elephant with a standard lamp). It is transformed into duck in contact with cool water.

Character particularly limited, it is as the only one to wish as Ranma and Akane approach, since that would leave him the free field with Shampoo. Its attitude towards Ranma thus fluctuates considerably, between the moments when he wants to help Ranma and those where, exceeded by the attentions of Shampoo towards Ranma, he wants to reduce it in dust.

It is a Master in technique of the hidden weapons: it is able to leave nowhere of the disproportionate weapons, of duck for the bath to delirious bombs.

As it is Chinese, resulting from the same tribe of Amazones Chinese, its name can be written Mu Tsu, or Mousse (see Shampoo).

Tatewaki Kunô (Julian Storme)

Tatewaki Kunô is the star of the Furinkan college of Tokyo where Akane and Ranma go. Captain of the club of Kendo, it does not have of cease to court Akane which pushes back it with punches. But to its meeting with the “girl with the plait” (osage No onna, which is not other than the female version of Ranma) it will be found to hesitate continuously between these two young girls who do not want him. Completely mythomaniac, he always manages to interpret their refusal like hidden evidence of love.

Kunô is the son of the headmaster of the Furinkan college, but also the brother of Kodachi Kunô. It is thus of a noble family, which does not fail to go up to him to the head. Always vêtu like a samurai, it walks with a saber in bamboo even in the corridors of the college.

It is also the cash cow which makes live the Tendô family: Nabiki unceasingly sells to him photographs of Akane or Ranma, that Kunô buys at ransom price.

In animates (but not in original work), it is affublé of a development, a calamitous ninja of the name of Sasuke. This last is used to him as spy, of servant but also, would say one, of nurse.

Kodachi Kunô (Geraldine Storme)

Sister of Tatewaki Kunô and girl of the main thing of the college Furinkan, it is coed with the college of Hebereke saint. She is champion of martial eurhythmics and is called the black Rose . The majority of its adversaries declare fixed price before the matches because Kodachi poisoned them, imprisoned, or made them sing.

She falls in love with Ranma whereas she fled the house of Tendô in middle of the night, after having tried to attack Akane. In way, it crosses Ranma and, surprised, is struck. Ranma saves it of a fall since the roof, and here is Kodachi subjugated by its saver.

It is the perfect one during her brother: he thought a love with Ranma girl and a competition with Ranma boy; it is éprise of Ranma boy and hates Ranma girl. None of both is able to include/understand or accept the curse of Ranma. The brother and the sister are thus often in conflict about their love, with Ranma between the two to receive the blows.

It should be noted that Kodachi is the only one of the four " fiancées" of Ranma not to be really been engaged to him.

Girl without scruple nor consideration for the others, it is impassioned of herb trade and chemistry and can compete with Shampoo in terms of poisons and potions. Of noble extraction, it has all the resources which it wishes to arrive to its ends.

She has a so horrible laughter which it is a weapon with him all alone.

Ukyô Kuonji (Frederique)

Ukyô one of many is promised in marriage of Ranma. Whereas Ranma and Ukyô were only children, Genma Saotome had concluded a market with the father from Ukyô: their children were to marry and the father of Ukyô, salesman of okonomiyaki (kind of Japanese pizza pie), offered his graver in dowry. What he was unaware of, it is that Ranma was already promised in marriage (with the one of the Tendô girls). Genma, once more, had used his/her son to adapt food. What was to arrive arrived, Genma flees with the dowry, leaving a six years old Ukyô behind him.

Ukyô grew in the feeling of rejection born of this situation, pouring its rancour in the training of the techniques of martial kitchen which accompany the preparation by the okonomiyaki. It also took the practice to dissimulate its femininity, going until being provided education for in a school for boys.

Teenager, it decides to be avenged for Genma and Ranma. What she is unaware of, it is that Ranma is not with the current of nothing because it was too small at the time of the facts: it did not even know that Uchan, as it calls his friend of childhood affectionately, is a girl. As Ukyô gets dressed as a boy, Ranma does not carry out immediately its error besides. When he discovers the truth, he tries to calm Ukyô by saying to him that it is nice. All that it gains, it is that Ukyô falls in love with him and wants that the promise of marriage is respected.

Ukyô, although teenager, opens a restaurant of okonomiyaki with Nerima. She only holds it, occasionally with the assistance (of liking or force) of Ranma, until she takes with her service a disguised ninja of the name of Konatsu. Ukyô has the direction of the trade, it is always leaving to make good deals.

Since its arrival with the Furinkan college, everyone knows that it is a girl. However, it decided to continue to get dressed like a boy. She will make nevertheless some distorsions with this resolution to allure Ranma.

She is the best friend of Ranma and seems a pleasant and nice girl, at least when she does not pass in " mode; been engaged acharnée" !

Soun Tendô (Aristide/Anatole Galand)

Widower since years, Soun has three girls: Kasumi, Nabiki and Akane. He learned martial arts in company from Genma Saotome, under the pitiless supervision of Happôsai.

Since the death of his wife, he saw a passive life: Kasumi deals with the house and Nabiki of finances. It is supposed that Soun gives courses of martial arts, since its house has an contiguous dôjo, but the series never shows it.

Soun is a nice man who adores his daughters but, like the majority of the adults of the series, he east depicts under one day negative. It is shown like a burden for the family, right to cry good when that does not go and to put itself at belly-flop when Happôsai is annoyed. It spends its days to be played, or rather to cheat, with the shôgi with Genma.

Genma Saotome (Genma Vincent)

Father of Ranma. It is transformed into panda in contact with cool water.

One always wonders how a man as could to him have a son like Ranma. With the first access, Genma is macho, lazy, opportunist and lying. It benefits without scruple from hospitality unlimited from Tendô. One discovers with the wire of the history that it accumulated the debts of money and of honor on its way and it is Ranma which pays the price of them each time. In addition to the marriage arranged with a Tendô girl, one can quote various promises of marriage (with Ukyô Kuonji, Kaori… and others undoubtedly). Moreover, it is beaten with punt seams by Ranma the every day in duel.

However, one realizes that, the rare times where it is really justified, Genma are a combatant except par. Only its natural idleness prevents it to more often express it. Finally, one sees it better by observing what it made of Ranma: an extraordinary warrior.

He does not have any direction of the honor on the other hand, contrary to his son or of his wife.

As much of characters " âgés" series (by oppositions to the teenagers who are the heroes), it is shown like useless most of the time, even a source of problems.

Happôsai (Main Ernestin)

The Master of Soun Tendô and Genma Saotome is a collector of bra and panties which it steals to the young girls of the vicinity.

To a certain extent, it is the only really hateful character of the series, that which one could often regard as a " méchant" : it is perverse, fundamentally dishonest person and liar, and brutal in his manner of teaching in Ranma. However, he lives at Tendô and the latter treat it like a family member, by respect due to elderly in any case.

Of an unspecified age, it controls an incalculable quantity of martial techniques, in particular Happo Daikarin, the technique of the large flower, of which it uses and misuses against Ranma.

In its youth, Happôsai remained near the village of Amazones Chinese and knew Cologne. It had to flee when its perversion completed to irritate Cologne.

Nabiki Tendô (Amandine Galant)

Sister of Akane and Kasumi, it has much character and likes the money. Crafty one, it tests by all the means (blackmails, taken bets at the time of the many duels to the college, sale of photographs of Ranma-girl in small behavior…) to tap some with the others. She takes care in particular that Ranma keeps towards her a consequent slate.

It is its manner with it, twisted certainly, to contribute to the good performance of its hearth, since it is it which keeps the family accounts and the cords of the purse!

Kasumi Tendô (Annabelle Gallant)

Older sister of Nabiki and Akane. She deals with all the pieces of housework of the house, plays the part of mother to the hearth since the death of their mother. She posts a smile inébranlable and keeps her calm even in the desperate plights. She thus seems always in withdrawal, even when she plays a key part.

It is such an angel that nobody, in the series, is able to make him the least evil.

Cologne (Same)

Great-grandmother of Shampoo. Matriarche of the tribe of Amazones Chinese, it knows innumerable techniques which go from the combat to herb trade, with a clear tendency to slyness. A nonexhaustive list includes/understands:

Bakusai tenketsu : technique of the point of rupture, which she teaches in Ryôga. It makes it possible to pulverize an inanimate object of only one finger, it does not matter its size.
Hiryû shoten ha: technique of the celestial dragon, which she teaches in Ranma when this one does not have any more a physical force. This technique opposes calm attacker to the rage of the defender, for an explosive result.

Very attached to the traditions of its tribe, she regards right now Ranma as her son-in-law, since he overcame Shampoo in duel (in male form).

Its Chinese name is " KB Long" but he is more usually written Cologne (see Shampoo).

Nodoka Saotome (Delphine)

Nodoka Saotome is the mother of Ranma. She lived only because of her Genma husband who left the family property with his young person wire Ranma (baby). Before leaving, it made him the promise to make of Ranma a man and a large Master in martial arts, if not they would be made both Seppuku (consistent ritual suicide to open the belly). Years later, it comes to return visit to the Tendô family to see Ranma finally.

The problem is that Ranma cannot be presented has his/her mother because of her transformations into a girl which put in danger its masculinity and would be likely to lead it to the seppuku (according to Genma). To avoid that, it is never shown as a man with his mother (and this in spite of her desire for doing it), always remaining under her female appearance and being made pass for Ranko, a cousin of Akane.

Nodoka always walks with the family katana (and shows itself rather awkward in its handling), which frequently recalls to Ranma the possibility seppuku…

Once arrived at Tendô, Nodoka plays a part of maternal figure not only for " Ranko" , but also for Tendô themselves. In spite of its frustration to have to remain as a girl, Ranma grants much importance to the moments spent with it. In fact, the arrival of Nodoka is one moment key in the relation between Ranma and Akane: the latter, private of his/her own mother, does all that it can to offer to Ranma the occasion to meet her mother under good conditions. But it is not so easy because Genma takes care.

Supporting characters

Dr. Tofu (Dr. Thibault)

Dr. Tofu is the osteopath-chiropractor of the Tendô family. He is also in love with Kasumi Tendô and has a very great affection for Akane. It is said also large Master in martial arts, thanks to his powerful techniques shiatsu. When it is in the presence of Kasumi, it tends to do anything.

Pantyhose Tarô (Taro sticking it)

Tarô “sticking it” was thus baptized by Happôsai, which was present during its birth and which gave him its first bath in one of the malefic sources, that of the yéti overlapping a bull and holding an eel and a crane.

It is a quite heavy name to carry and Tarô swore to continue Happôsai to make him change its name. That did not arrange its character. Tarô is a lout who works badly in team. But it is not fundamentally bad.

Hinako Ninomiya

Professor with the college Furinkan, Hinako with the reputation of knowing to subdue any undisciplined pupil. The headmaster invited it to regulate the case of Ranma and all the problems which follow it inevitably.

It is also a former disciple of Happôsai. Although adult, it with appearance and the behavior of a weak and dissipated child. She does not recover (temporarily) her pulpy adult appearance only after having used the technique that Happôsai taught him when she was child: she absorbs the vital energy of her adversaries through any round object. She can then return it in a powerful attack.

She expresses an interest shown for Soun, interest perhaps reciprocal, but the three Tendô girls are so opposite there that never went nowhere.

Akari Unryû

Young girl well as it is necessary and very shy person, Akari lives in a farm and devotes herself to the raising of pigs sumotori. For it, the pig is the symbol even of the perfection. It moves besides never without its faithful destrier Katsunishiki, an enormous pig champion of sumo.

It thus was very intended to capture the heart of Ryôga. His/her grandfather had said that it could marry only one man able to beat Katsunishiki in combat, to him which Ryôga almost did without realizing it. Briefing of the curse of Ryôga by Ranma, it falls insane in love with Ryôga.

This love is reciprocal, but the tendency natural of Ryôga to complicate any situation and its feelings suspends some for Akane, make that their history does not advance much.

Gosunkugi Hikaru

Gosunkugi is a pupil of the Furinkan college to the weak profile and the émacié face. It is versed in the practices voodoo, which primarily amounts being typed on the fingers with a hammer when it tries to nail a headstock with the wall for the envoûter.

In love stiff with Akane, it often tries to use its supposed capacities to draw aside Ranma of its way, without much success. If Ranma treats it like an intruder, Akane takes its defense regularly, under pretext that Ranma does not have to attack weaker than him.

Metamorphoses

All the characters transformists fell into one from the many malefic sources from Jusen (Jusenkyo), in China: in each one, an living being drowned there, and since, whoever tomb takes there thereafter the shape of this living being to each contact with cool water, to regain its original shape only in the effect of warm water.

Let us note that the transformation of Taro suggests that an eel drowned.

Foam and Shampoo: the feelings of Shampoo for Mousse are very seldom perceptible. In general, Shampoo affects to be unaware of Mousse and to continue Ranma, in accordance with the law the Amazon.

Concerning the couple of Ranma and Akane, it is not always obvious to perceive the love which they test one for the other, especially in first half of work (the only known part of people which saw only the series TV).

Most obvious is that each one of them acknowledges its love, on several occasions, out of reach ears of the other. Akane does it more easily than Ranma, because this last trails the weight of its education macho. Ranma thinks (with itself) that it falls in love with Akane every fifteen days. Akane regrets not being able to express its feelings, by timidity.

Then, there are the acts which speak more than the words: innumerable times, one fly to the help of the other, or protect the honor from the other, without thinking of the consequences, and are found well embarrassed when somebody underlines this not involved act. Moreover, they show much honesty one towards the other, even if it is hard. All been engaged of Ranma are shown excessively flattering and cherish the ego of Ranma in the direction of the hair, except Akane.

Lastly, Rumiko Takahashi sowed some very discrete small details which reveal the complementarity of Ranma and Akane. Thus, Akane proves to be true rough in its sleep: it gives blows around it, with as well of force as even Happôsai does not sometimes happen to be demolished some. Other side, Ranma is such a champion of dodging that he manages to avoid the attacks of Ryôga without awaking. Both thus are well made one for the other.

Volumes

Original work counts 38 volumes. The author explained one day that it had in project an epilog (of which it given the content forever), but one can all the same consider the series as concluded such as it is.

The series is entirely available in French at Glénat. The direction of reading was occidentalized (first page on the left), therefore all the drawings were turned over. Not to be thus astonished if the characters have the heart on the right!

Animate and OAV

1989 - 92: Ranma ½ . The series TV counts 161 episodes and covers the first 22 volumes of the original manga. A certain number of episodes are original and do not have equivalents in the manga. Others are adaptations of stories of the manga, in general simplified for questions of duration (the stories of the manga are very variable length). Initial series diffused in France by the Club Dorothée on TF1 in a truncated form (censures).
1993 - 96: Ranma ½ . The series covering only half of work, 11 OAV were carried out in supplement. None treats the last two volumes of the manga (final history).

1994 : Chô-musabetsu kessen! Ranma-TEAM versus densetsu No hôhô (the phoenix légengaire). From one thirty minutes duration only, this film is often classified like OAV.
