Ranjît Singh
Ranjît Singh (1780 - 1839) is a chief Sikh, unifier and Râja of the Panjâb, incarnation of the spirit of the Khâlsâ. It is buried with Lâhore with the Pakistan. He is the son of Mohan Singh, small war leader of the area of Gujranwala, then with the head of the misl (faction) Sukerchakia, which he succeeds the twelve years age.
When Ranjît Singh becomes governor of Lâhore to the profit of the Afghan , Panjâb is burst in many entities under the direction of war leaders such as his father. Ranjît Singh makes soon independent in 1799. It takes the title of Mahârâjadhirâaja the April 12th 1801, then extends its field by annexing Amritsar at the expense of the Moghol S in 1802, Ludhiana in 1806, Kangra and Jammu in 1809, Wazirabad in 1810, Faridkot in 1807, Attock in 1813 and Multân in 1818. It occupies then the Cachemire in 1819 and seizes Peshâwar in 1823, thus melting a great State sikh.
It obtains these military successes thanks to the modernization of its army which it undertook by putting at its service European officers like the Allard French or the Ventura Italian who organizes it with the Western one. It signs a peace treaty with the English Compagnie of the Eastern Indies and with the Afghan emir Shâh Shûjâ which ensures peace and stability in its state. It accommodates this last in 1814, then in escape, and receives from it diamond Koh-i Nor. Ranjît Singh makes embellish the Harmandir Sahîb by recovering it of marble and while making gild its roof what is worth the name of to him Temple of Gold .
Ranjit Singh dies in 1839, four of its Râni and seven of his/her concubines slaves make Satî on its Bûcher funerary. Its succession is difficult, Kharag Singh, his/her son and successor dies the November 5th 1840, the son of this last, Nunihâl Singh, goes up on the throne and dies the November 17th according to. The râni Chandâ Kûnwar, widow of Kharag Singh, then ensures regency for Sher Singh, one of the brothers of Kharag Singh, but he is assassinated in 1843. It is finally his/her son Dhulîp Singh who reaches the throne but it reigns only three years, the British annexing Pânjab in 1846.
