Randle Cotgrave

Randle Cotgrave , died in 1634, was a philologist English.

Originating in the Cheshire, Cotgrave entered to the Université of Cambridge in 1587. He was secretary of William Cecil, 1st baron Burghley, before publishing has Dictionarie off the French and English Tongues , a Dictionnaire, with the French words and the definitions in English, often introduced like the first English-French dictionary. This dictionary, which constituted in its time a true projection in terms of lexicography and of which historical importance perdure, has in fact preceded by the has Dictionarie French and English: published for the benefite off the studious in that language of the Huguenot Claude de Sainliens.
