Rampart

A rampart is an element of Fortification surrounding a Ville or a Citadelle, appearing at the 16th century, and which replaces the wall. It is an element characteristic of architecture Bastion born, conceived to hold account in attack and especially to resist in defense the progress of artillery using the metal ball.

Contrary to the thick wall entirely out of stone built of the strong castles and the medieval cities, the rampart is simple a Wall retaining retaining an important ground mass, intended to resist artillery. The ground mass absorbs the shocks of the received artillery blows, and damps out the vibrations of artillery defending the Fortified town.
