Rambouillet

Rambouillet one of the sub-prefectures of Yvelines, is located in the south of the department and in the middle of the area Île-de-France.

Medium-sized city surrounded by the forest of the same name, located at 50 km in the south-west of Paris, Rambouillet is in the center of a vast commune which counts 20.000 hectares of Forêt S and 500 ha of arable lands.

The current mayor is Gerard Larcher, ex-minister delegated to Employment, the Work and the Professional insertion of the young people in the Gouvernement Dominique de Villepin. He found his seat in July 2007 in the place of Jean-Frederic Poisson (UMP-FRS).

Its inhabitants is called Rambolitains, its colors are the green and the white.

Geography

The commune of Rambouillet is on a plate timbered with approximately 160 meters of altitude, where occur of many brooks feeding the rivers which radiate around the solid mass of Rambouillet. It is in particular the case of the Guéville, affluent of the Drouette, which takes its source in the park of the castle. The course of Drouette, resulting from the pond of the Tower, drains the territory of the commune in its part is to the gold pond in the south.

The communal territory is made up to 80% of primarily wooded rural areas. The wooded areas are mainly in north and is west of the commune like in its south-eastern fringe.

The urbanization, blocked in the west by the presence of the castle and its field, extended towards the south along main road 10, where a zone of activity settled, and towards the east, between main road 10 and Drouette, with important suburban zones.

The city is served by the Trunk road 10, directed north-eastern/south-western, which avoids the downtown area thanks to a deviation passing to the east. The secondary road 906, directed East-West connects Rambouillet to the Vallée de Chevreuse and Maintenon (valley of the Eure). On the railway level, it has a station served by the Transilien Paris-Montparnasse on the line of Paris (station of Montparnasse) in Chartres. The semi-direct way Paris-Montparnasse - Rambouillet takes 34 minutes.

The communes bordering are the Breviaries and Perray-in-Yvelines in north, Old woman-Church-in-Yvelines and Clairefontaine-in-Yvelines in the east, Sonchamp and Orcemont in the south, Gazeran and Poigny-the-Forest in the west.

History

The first mention of the existence of the Village of Rambouillet goes up with 768. It appears in the donation of the Forêt of Yveline made by Pépin the Brief in the abbey of Saint-Denis. At that time, its name is " Rambolitum ", which will give Rambolitain , the name of the inhabitants of Rambouillet. In 1784, the king Louis XVI bought the field of Rambouillet and made build for the queen a dairy in the park.

In 1786, construction of the building intended to be used as seat for Bailliage of Rambouillet by the architect Jean-Jacques Thévenin. It is nowadays the town hall.

The Château of Rambouillet was the seat many international meetings, including one economic top and initiating monetarist of the G6 (the United States, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, FR of Germany and France) in 1975.

Economy

Rambouillet knew to control the dynamics of its development and its unemployment rate is today of 5,3%. Siemens are the principal employer with more than 1.400 paid and its adhesion in Cosmetic Valley, carrying the Pole of competitiveness " Sciences of the Beauty and Bien-être" is a very complementary asset for the future development of the city. The economic development now transferred to the community from common allowed the development of the park of activities of the Bel Air and nearly 2.000 new employment are considered right now from here 2012.

Rambouillet is the seat (decentralized) of the central management of the Commissariat of the Army (since 1990) - Estienne district.

Culture

Architectural heritage

  • the Château of Rambouillet, whose construction began in 1375, accepted Rabelais, doctor of the king, and François Ier, which liked to drive out there. The March 31st 1547, it died there in the tower of the castle which kept since its name. Property of Angennes, of Joseph Fleuriau d' Armenonville, Minister of Justice of France, count de Toulouse, wire naturalness legitimated of Louis XIV and Madam de Montespan, then of his/her son the duke of Penthièvre, it was acquired by Louis XVI which made build in the park the dairy of the Queen to try (in vain) to interest Marie-Antoinette in it. It is there that Charles X, reducing Paris following the insurrection known as of the " Three Glorious " , with most of its family the July 31st 1830 comes to take refuge. Two days later, the king, just as the Dolphin, abdicated in favor of the duke of Bordeaux. It is President Felix Faure which made of Rambouillet its residence of summer in 1896. Since, Rambouillet remains one of the residences of the President of the Republic, especially used for International Conferences (like G6, in 1975), reception of foreign Heads of State, etc
  • the Palate of King de Rome was built starting from 1784 on the order of Louis XVI to be used as hotel of the Government, it was then restored by Napoleon 1st which made the residence of his/her son of it, the King de Rome. The hotel of the Government was thus renamed in 1812 “Palate of King de Rome” and preserved this name until the Restauration. It is in 1989, that the Town of Rambouillet buys the western wing of the building like its contiguous garden there, in order to organize exposures, cultural events there and to create there (April 2001) the Museum of the play of the goose (Dietsch collection). The Palate of King de Rome in Rambouillet is classified historic building since 1993 and receives temporary exhibitions with very varied topics.

  • the national Bergerie, created in 1786 by Louis XVI shelters the Musée of the sheep. It also lodges “Wise”, the Vache offered to Jacques Chirac by the trade union FNSEA at the time of the living room of agriculture of Paris in 2001.
