History

The city was desired at the 9th century by certain Rambert, count of Mortagne or abbot of Senones, the sources diverge about it. At the 12th century, Etienne de Bar surrounds the borough of palisades and ditches, then at the 12th century, Jacques of Lorraine, also bishop of Metz, replace the wood palisades by a flanked wall of 24 grosses towers.

At the 16th century, the city is set fire to by the army huguenote under the orders of the baron de Bollweiler, but it is raised quickly. It is in 1581 that the middle-class men decide the construction of the Town hall.

Rambervillers integrates the Duché of Lorraine in 1718, becoming French in 1766.

The October 9th 1870, by drawing up barricades against the Prussian invader, 200 national guards resist one day against more than 2000 Germans. For this temerity, the city accepted the Légion of honor while its name was given to the one of the streets of Paris.

Blasonnement

Money to the cross of Lorraine of mouths cotoyée of letters I R and of two crescents of azure and, in abyss, the cross of the Legion of honor.

The blazon was composed in 1718 by the duke Léopold of Lorraine at the time of fastening of Rambervillers in Lorraine, with other territories of Évêché of Metz, whose city depended before.

The cross of Lorraine symbolizes this event: initial the I and R of the Latin words (Imperator Rex) mean that the duke Léopold belonged to the imperial family of Austria and that it had the title of Royal Highness. The crescents glorifient the victories gained by his/her father, the duke Charles V, over the Turks, in particular in front of Vienna in 1683.

The Legion of honor was added in the middle of the blazon, pursuant to the decree of April 19th, 1896 for the defense of Rambervillers by its National Guards on October 9th, 1870. Rambervillers was then the second city decorated by the Republic and sième since creation with the Order by Napoleon 1st.

The Military Crosses 1914-1918 and 1939-1945, decreed in following the city, are supported, with the top of the blazon, by two sticks. She recall that Rambervillers belonged, before 1718, with the bishops of Metz, whereas those of Toul managed it with the spiritual one.

On the sides of the ecu are reproduced of the reasons for the hammer of the door of the Town hall, works of a craftsman ironworker rambuvetais of XVe century, which also evokes the two bishops.
