Ralph Towner is a Guitariste and Pianiste of American Jazz born in 1940 with Chehalis, in the state of Washington.
Biography
Ralph Towner grew in the state of the Oregon, raised by parents musicians (his/her mother was piano teacher). He studied the traditional composition at the university of Oregon and in graduate fate in 1963. He leaves then a year in Austria to study the traditional Guitare and returns to the university Oregon to study it the composition. He settles in 1968 with New York as a guitarist/a type-setter to make career there.
In 1970 it takes part in the creation of the group Oregon with Paul McCandless, Glen Moore, and Collin Walcott. Original by the instrumentation, the group also dissociates by its mixture of the traditional music Indian with the jazz avant-garde, and records albums which will have much influence and a certain popularity. The Seventies mark also the beginning of its collaboration with the label ECM, at which it recorded the near total of its discs as a leader.
Ralph Towner never uses amplification, using only the traditional Guitare 6 cords (nylon) and in a very regular way a guitar 12 cords (metal). In fact its groups are generally made up of a small number of acoustic musicians, stressing dynamics and the interaction between the musicians rather than on the sound volume.
It is devoted also much to the composition, works for Orchestre mainly but also Sonate for piano or film musics.
