Ralph Backstrom
Ralph Gerald Backstrom (born the September 18th 1937 with Kirkland Lake city of the Ontario with the Canada) is a former professional player of occupational hockey of the National league of hockey.
Career
He initially played during two season with the Canadian junior of Montreal, of the League of hockey junior of the Quebec (ancestor of LHJMQ) before being transferred with the Canadians from Ottawa-Hull of the Ontario Hockey Association , today Ontario Hockey League . The Canadians of Ottawa-Hull is the highest junior team affiliated to the Canadian of Montreal in the east of the Canada, team for which he is the captain whereas they reach the Coupe Memorial in 1958.The following season, it is presented to the camp of drive of the large club. He plays so that the leaders of the CH decide to rather leave it with the team than to send it in their subsidiary company of the American Ligue of hockey, the Americans of Rochester. This year, Backstrom can thank its owners by collecting 40 points and the trophy Frank Calder, given to the recruit of the year of the LNH. It so much impressed, that it gained this trophy with more of the double of vote over the second in list, Carl Brewer of Toronto. The following year, it impresses largely the trainer-chief, Toe Blake, by carrying with the camp of drive a great dedication with the play and a contagious enthusiasm. Although its production of point falls at 28 points, it can solidify its position of attacker-defensive and becomes a key player with the team.
Although there were two players of center which outclassed it, Jean Béliveau and Henri Richard, it helps the team has to gain six Coupes Stanley. He knows five seasons of more than 20 goals with the Canadian , including one of 27 known in 1961-62, a top for him in career.
Towards the end of the Years 1960, Backstrom feels that it achieved all that it could in the uniform of the Canadian : he knew two long lethargies very frustrating for him, one in particular, in 1968-69, where during 20 consecutive part he does not succeed in marking any goal. A striking fact in its career arrived on April 10th, 1969 when it marked its very first goal gaining in Prolongation, against the Bruins of Boston in the first match of the semi-finals.
During the between-season of 1970, it became obvious that it wanted a change of landscape, and preferably on the coast-West. The thought to return to Montreal as a player of role was if discouraging that it notifies even with the direction of the club his intention to withdraw competition. But it changes idea and is presented to the camp of drive. Its uncertainty still haunting it leaves the team before the beginning of the season to still return, but this time, the leaders of the club decide to only use it as player of replacement.
Finally, its request is heard and Backstrom is exchanged with the Kings of Los Angeles. The managing director of the Canadian , Sam Pollock, operated with a hand of Master: in May 1970, it succeeds in obtaining Seals d' Oakland their choice of first round to next the fishing out, and as Seals knew a very bad season, this gave all the chances to Pollock to obtain the very first choice and thus to be able to recover the young feeling which was Guy Lafleur. However Kings also knew many difficulties and were likely to fish out before the CH . Pollock thus chooses to offer Backstrom to Kings, which of this fact even, knew an obvious improvement and known Backstrom a new lease of life.
In February 1973, it was acquired by the Blackhawks of Chicago which it took into account the last six of its 278 goals marked in a little more: 1000 parts in the National league of hockey. This year, it reached the mark of the 20 goals or more in one season for 7th and last time in the LNH.
Before the beginning of the season 1973-74, it decides to join the Cougars of Chicago, of the Worldwide association of Hockey. At this first season, it counted 83 points and receipt the Trophée Paul Deneau, given to the player judged more fair-play among the players of the AMH.
Some week later, it was invited by the leaders of the Worldwide association of Hockey to take by with the series of 1974 which will see the best players of this league crossing iron with the best player of the the USSR. It played there with like partner of trio Mark and Gordie Howe, Backstrom superb on ice and was finished among the best pointers of the tournaments with a harvest of 8 points in as many parts. However, he knew one difficult season 1974-75 with the Cougars collecting only 39 points and the club decided not to protect it for the fishing out from expansion which took place in the month of May 1975. It was fished out there by the Spurs of Denver with which it played only one half season before being exchanged again, this time, with the Whalers of New England with which it will finish its career, collecting 48 points.
