Rajah Yoga

The Rāja Yoga ( royal yoga or royal union ) is the Yoga which is exposed in the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali . The term Rajah Yoga is a Rétronyme, introduced at the 15th century into the Hatha Yoga Pradipika , in order to distinguish this type of yoga of the Hatha yoga.

The Rajah Yoga is called also Ashtanga Yoga . Ashtanga means with eight branches, which reflects the eight aspects of this way. The eight branches are:

  • yama - Code of conduct, reserve of oneself
  • Niyama - religious Level: engagement with the practice, study and devotion
  • Āsana - Integration of the spirit and the body by the physical-activity
  • Pranayama - Regulation of the breathing which leads to the interation of the spirit and the body
  • Pratyahara - Abstraction of the directions, withdrawal of the objects of their perception
  • Dharana - Concentration, spirit on a point
  • Dhyāna - Meditation: the quiet acitvity leads to the samadhi
  • Samadhi - the quiet state of conscience
