History

Raincy is in the middle of the Pays of Aulnoye.

Its current name is a transformation of the name: Rincis, meaning coppice, clearing or careers. As of 1130, this clearing (with the edge of the Forest of Bondy) was the property of monk of the Abbaye of Tyron (diocese of Chartres).

In 1639, “the ground of Rincis” was bought by Jacques Bordier, intendant of finances of the King, who made build in 1640, a castle carrying the signature of Vau. It then attached this ground to that of Bondy of which he was also the lord.

Many personalities remained there: Louis XV, the Large Cop, the palatine princess Anne de Gonzague, the Tsar Pierre Large the, the family of Orleans, Madam de Montesson, the Scottish courtesan Grace Dalrymple Elliott. Molière played there for the first time the Tartuffe in five acts.

In 1694, Blood Louis, then first Master of hotel of the King and captain of huntings, joins together the grounds of Livry and those of Raincy, and the castle became that of Livry.

In 1769, the field passed between the hands of Louis-Philippe of Orleans: modifications were made to the castle and a park was drawn by Piètre (one of the first parks drawn with English.)

The field is confiscated with the Révolution; it will be returned to Orleans only in 1819. The castle almost is then entirely destroyed and the hosts live in the “Russian houses” which were built towards 1780 and were devastated in 1848.

The park is declared property national in 1848 and its Lotissement involves the development of Raincy (then in Seine-et-Oise), which is set up in commune in 1869.

The law of July 10th, 1964 defines the administrative reorganization of the Paris region… and Raincy became Sous-Préfecture of the new Department of the Seine-Saint-Denis.
