Raimon de Montredon (born in? - died the April 16th 1160) was a monk of the Moyen-âge, which was Chanoine of Nimes, then archdeacon of Béziers, bishop of Agde and finally archbishop of Arles of 1142 with 1160.
Biography
Of Languedocien origin , the archbishop of Arles Raimon de Montredon always expressed a benevolent neutrality with respect to Alphonse the Jordan in the conflict which opposed the houses of Aragon and of Toulouse. Thus the September 2nd 1143, to Fourques, it gave the Argence - a small territory between Beaucaire and Saint-Gilles) - in Fief to the count de Toulouse - of 1112 with 1148 - which was also marquis de Provence.
With Arles, the archbishop Raimon de Montredon - as thereafter its successors - is concerned with specify the nature of the relations which bind the Église to faithful laic which holds of it - often since generations - some their fields. He shows himself initially anxious to consolidate and develop the inheritance of the episcopal mense, as testify some the successive inventories to its beginning of archiépiscopat. As of its taking of, it takes also great care of the service of the oaths which it estimates to be to him due. It makes modify their form in the feudalizing little by little. Thus, for example, in 1142, Peire de Lambesc which receives in stronghold of the Raimon archbishop - n the other hand of the abandonment of its rights on Salon - the castrated Vernègues and of Avallon, must lend an oath of fidelity which explicitly obliges it with the Hommage, to the assistance (“ servicium ”), with a Albergue of twenty knights and with having to return both castrated on simple request of the archbishop. However the large lords like those of the Beams or Marseilles, escape this treatment and profit from the continuation from the traditional relations, more levelling. With regard to the Beams, taking into account the dominant position of this family among the large laic ones of the area, Raimon de Montredon indeed quickly includes/understands the interest to get along with these lords who have moreover a certain influence on the Count of Saint-Gilles with which the head office of Arles east in delicacy in connection with the grounds of Argence since the beginning of the 12th century.
From 1150, it frequently arrives that one calls upon the archbishop of Arles - as with the count de Provence - to return Arbitrage S in conflicts which at the time tear - apparently in a regular way - the aristocratic company. For that, Raimon de Montredon was surrounded by Juriste S like Bernat d' Auriac or Maître Million.
For reasons which one is unaware of, the town of Arles seems to be revolted against its archbishop towards 1150, following what this one had to concede a charter of consulate at the city.
Raimon of Montredon endeavors also to maintain good relationships with emperors Germanic, which is the Suzerain S distances of the city, initially with Conrad III, then with its successor Frederic Ier Barberousse, of which it will obtain - with Worms, in June 1152 (or 1153?) - the confirmation of the privileges of the Church of Arles.
The September 29th 1152, it organizes the translation of the relics of Saint Trophime, of the Alyscamps to the basilica Saint-Etienne (called nowadays Saint-Trophime ). He dies the April 16th 1160. Its tomb is today in basic the Saint-Trophime of Arles.
