Railroads of the Suburbs of Rheims

The Railroads of the Suburbs of Rheims (or C.B.R.) were district distributers of railroads to metric gauge Track of the department of the Marne, which, to its appogé, extended on 400 km by serving 180 communes.

History

The first line, open in 1896, connects Rheims to Ludes.

The line Épernay - Montmirail, declared public utility in 1899, was brought into service in 1903, and closed in 1937.

At the time of the First World War, the network was destroyed to 90% and rebuilds in the following years.

However, the cost of the rebuilding of the network, the rise in the expenditure and the inexorable reduction of the traffic lead the Department to repurchase the network, which it leases with the General society of Departmental Transport (SGTD).

In 1929, one attends the first justified train cancellations, like elsewhere, by the development of automobile transport. The passenger traffic ceases on the network in 1947 (Rheims-Asfeld line) and goods transport intervened in 1953, ringing the knell of this network.

Lines

August 1st

The network was established with the metric spacing, generally in verge of roads in order to reduce the expenditure, but also including/understanding sections in exclusive right of way. So the lines had layouts sinuous and broken, with slopes reaching 43 mm/m. the rail employed is of the 22 then 25 kg/m.

Exploitation

August 1st The network was exploited by the Railroad company of the suburbs of Rheims and extensions , created in 1894 at the instigation of the Baron Empain. It amalgamated in 1923 with the Railroad company of Marles with Moncornet to form the Groupe of the secondary railroads , famous in 1927 Compagnie of the secondary railroads .

This company amalgamated with the Railroad company of the North-East to form in 1960 the Compagnie of the railroad secondaries and transport automobile (CFSTA), it even amalgamated in 1966 with the General society of automobile transport and railroads to form the current company of the Railroads and automobile transport (CFTA).

Rolling stock

August 1st Initial rolling stock consisted of 18 engines bicabines standard 030T provided by Tubize or traditional White-Misseron of the secondary railroads to metric gauge track, equipped with a central plugging and compressed-air continuous brake.

The cars, they, of type at platform open or were closed, or glazed cases.

Preserved material

MTVS preserves a car at axles of 2ère class N°B 328 built by White-Misseron in 1892, rebuilt in 1994 on frame of origin.

Year

The network have a very important role during the First World War, which caused him many destruction.

At the end of the conflict, the CBR were decorated with the Military Cross.
