Rail-bound Transport in Tunisia

The rail-bound transport in Tunisia makes its appearance at the end of the 19th century.

The railroads Tunisia NS are with normal way of 1,435 m width in the north of Tunis and with Narrow gauge railway of 1 m in the center and the south of the country.

History

In 1870, the company Italy Mancardi does not obtain the Concession of a railroad between Tunis and the area of the the Sahel but, for lack of capital, does not implement it. This is why, the first Tunisian railway line, connecting Tunis to Marsa (TGM), is inaugurated the August 2nd 1872 by Sadok Bey.

In 1952, the overall length of the exploited lines is of 2044 kilometers of which:

  • 456 km of normal ways and 1110 km of metric gauge tracks exploited by the farm Company of the Tunisian railroads: These lines belong at the Tunisian State but are built partly with the guarantee of the French State. Their financing is ensured by the local budget except for the Tunis-Ghardimaou line which is repurchased in 1922 with the Compagnie of the railroads Bône-Guelma.
  • 440 km of metric gauge tracks exploited by the Company of phosphates and the railroads of Sfax-Gafsa
  • 38 km of normal ways exploited by the Company of the trams of Tunis
