Comments
Turned in black and white, Raging Bull is a biographical film drawn from the book of the same name Co-writing by Jake Motta itself, Joseph Carter and Peter Savage. One of the principal characteristics of Raging Bull holds in the way in which the scenes of engagements are filmed. Martin Scorsese, in preoccupations with a realism, used a particular technique. The engagements, contrary to other films of boxing are not a simple assembly of several sequences, filmed by many cameras placed out of the boxing ring. Here, the realizer decided to use only one camera, placed inside even of the boxing ring, the made-to-order of a direct participant in the combat. Such a technique is however tiresome because she asked a precise play on behalf of the actors, in front of placing herself at the good place and rigorously carrying out the movements envisaged in advance. It is this difficulty which explains the important duration of turning devoted to the only scenes of combat which, although not exceeding 10 minutes in the total duration of film, asked for not less than one month of turning.
Named eight times at the Oscars (whose those of best film and the best realizer), Raging Bull gained of them only two: Oscar of the best actor for Robert De Niro and Oscar of the best assembly for Thelma Schoonmaker. Half-failure commercial at the time of its exit into the room (perhaps due to the fact that the film is in black and white), Raging Bull tardily reached its film worship statute, so much so that he is today regarded as one of best films of the Eighties, and one of best films of boxing to have ever been carried out.
