Ragga

The Ragga , abbreviation of Raggamuffin: (“rag” = herds, “muff” = empoté, good with nothing)
is a musical genre resulting from the movement Dancehall reggae and appeared in Jamaica at the end of the Années 1980, characterized by a repetitive diction pointing out the Toaster S.

In slang jamaïcain, a small “glandor” and, by extension, a marginal lifestyle, a way of being and of behaving: a débrouillard which galère but which will remain honest until the end and will make very to be left there without never betraying anybody.

This term thus indicates at the same time a category of individual and a musical genre. The “raggamuffin” jamaïcains autoproduisent their discs where they comment on the topicality, and sell them city downtown. Crowd gathers around the Sound system, the sound system where DJ is expressed on the music of the disc proposed with the sale, in a diction which can sometimes be high-speed.

The ragga includes/understands two complementary subcategories: the Slackness , with the texts ribalds, to see sexists, and the to coil , more romantic and peaceful.

History

Appeared in Jamaica at the end of the years 1980, it is resulting from the heritage of the vocal style left by the old men Djs " roots" , spoken than sung more (U Roy, King Stitch), but especially by Djs Rub-a-Dub like Yelloman, Lone To arrange or others which right before the appearance of the digital music show already a manner of singing typical, near to the consonances Hip hop and dissociating style “singer” (singer) mélodieux. As of 85, the digital revolution starts via the producer Loyd “King Jammy” James who creates his riddim Sleng Teng (instrumental) to leave only one limps at rate/rhythm, synthetizer and other tools leaving little place to the musicians.

Many experiments are born and mainly through the creation of rhythmic faster (riddim “bogle”) which are detached from rhythmic digital but more “roots”.

It is as from this period that a whole generation of singers representative of the style raggamuffin will hold the head of the poster in Jamaica. They result generally from the end of the Rub time has Dub like Papa San, Stitchie, Nardo Ranks and is illustrated at the same time in studio and sound systems on large digital sessions.

This style will thus remain marked of its print like a musical style dancing but reflecting Jamaican reality in its entirety. One finds there sets of themes social (conscious), sexual (slack) or well of others.

The style will thus open the way with the current style “dancehall” represented by artists like Sean Paul, inter alia. Additional Précison, contrary to an generally accepted idea the " reggae dancehall " precede the raggamuffin. the reggae dancehall appeared at the end of the Sixties when one increased the speed of rhythmic the reggae. It was about the festive alternative of the reggae, that which was played in surfaces of dance (dancehall). Thus, called a time " rud-a-dub" , then raggamuffin in the years 80-90. Then by surprising " return to the sources" , it took again the name of " dancehall" that much wrongly regards as a style born recently.

Today, of the figures such as Massilia Sound System, Raggasonic, the Hen Robbers, Saï Saï, Yaniss Odua, Féfé Typical, Nuttea, Keefaz incarnate this style on the metropolitan French scene, on the other side of the Atlantic in the Antilles, Karukera Sound System, Admiral T, Daly and Tiwony, for the jamaïcains, one can quote in particular Elephant Man, Beenie Man, Buju Banton

Ragga and Homophobie

During the summer 2004, the countryside Stop Murder Music is launched by the British association OutRage! . Ulcerated by the multiplication of the remarks homophobes in the titles dancehall jamaïcains, the collective decides to lead the hard life to 8 stars jamaïcaines: Beenie Man, Capleton, Sizzla, Vybz Kartel, Buju Banton, Bounty Killer, T.O.K and Elephant Man.

Demonstrations, boycotts and cancellation in concerts follow one another. Broadly the losses for the industry of the dancehall are estimated at 7,2 million euros.

French Admiral T, Daddy Mory and Krys is also in the collimator of gay associations and lesbians when they speak about the battyman (pedal), of the Makomè (fags in Creole).

The recording companies of the artists concerned finally found an agreement with defense associations of homosexual in Jamaica and in the United Kingdom, after which the artists jamaïcains again could obtain visas to come to occur in Europe.

It however should be specified that the artists in question, who of course write their texts themselves, were not present during the agreement made between the recording companies and associations. Nevertheless the majority of them were expressed on this subject affirming that they would not refer any more to homosexual in studio as in concert.

During many interviews of shown artists jamaicains homophobie, certain singers disavow the violence of their words against the gay community and claim that “faya battymen” (“burns the fags”) only means “to purify these people by fire”.
