With the arrival of Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk, the group will mark the Années 1990 until its dissolution in 2000. The group reforms in January 2007 for the festival of Coachella is one year before the American presidential elections.

The group is characterized mainly by rhythmic signed words of Rocha, the effects of guitar of Morello and the political standpoint in and in-outside musical sphere (against the Racisme, the Capitalisme and the Mondialisation). Rather directed towards the extreme left, RATM is known for its many claims and its support with various social and musical movements of claim.

Rage Against the Machine was always articulated around same the four members, for a formation of the type very traditional Power trio wide in the various kinds of the Rock:

History

Birth

The origins of RATM go up at the time where Zack of Rocha and Tim Commerford went to school. It meet and become friendly when the first learns with the other how to fly of food to the canteen. Zack of Rocha then cultivates a deep interest for the Musique, which it ends up transmitting to his friend Tim, who starts by playing of the low . In addition, Zack of Rocha maintains the relations with the rock'n'roll medium of Huntington Beach, in California, and it starts to play of the Guitare with a group called “Hardstance”, then it joined Inside Out.

During this time, Tom Morello plays of the guitar with Libertyville, in the Illinois, various groups of garage rock'n'roll like Electric Sheep, with the guitarist of Tool, Adam Jones. Tom Morello ends up going to Los Angeles, persuaded that it is the ideal place to form a true rock group. In a club of rap, it attends a service of Zack of Rocha. As soon as he manages to seize the direction of the words, Tom Morello adheres immediately to the ideas that they carry. Then, Tom Morello meets Brad Wilk, which answered an advertisement saying that a group sought a beater. Zack of Rocha calls his/her old friend Tim Commerford: the serious things can then start.

1991-1992: Beginnings

The first representation of the group is done in a garage, at one of the friends of Tim Commerford, in Huntington Beach. The four musicians play only five songs, which they wrote, but their friends appreciate them so much that they owe the rejouer several times. They then decide to launch out in the court of large, with a band of twelve songs recorded in a local studio. They start to play in clubs in the neighborhoods of Los Angeles and manage to sell five hundred copies of their band. They are made little by little their place in the local musical medium and carry out even the first part of Porno for Pyros for their first great concert. They also play on the secondary scene of the Lollapalooza II , in Los Angeles, as “young talents”. They end up signing a contract with Epic Records (a subsidiary company of Sony BMG) and they continue to turn while their first disc, Rage Against the Machine , is then carried out.

Zack of Rocha uses already the name of Rage Against the Machine (in French, Rage towards the System ) before the formation of the group. Indeed, Of Rocha belonged to a group of hardcore, Inside Out, of which one of the songs is called thus. It was envisaged to give this name to the second album. However, the group separates front. When Zack of Rocha and Tom Morello form their group, the name Rage Against the Machine appeared to them more adapted to the style of music and the ideas that they wish to diffuse. According to Tom Morello, “The Machine” of which it is question represents ideas like the Mondialisation, the Néolibéralisme, the Racisme, the elitism and the Indifférence, inter alia.

1992-1994: Dedication

The group begins its first round then, with Suicidal Tendencies, until the publication of the disc at Epic in October 1992. This one has much success in the American charts: it remains in Signal 200 of the magazine Billboard during 89 weeks. In Europe, it is the title “ Killing in the Name ” which reveals the group with the general public. Success is phenomenal for a kind rather ignored on the old continent.

They give then several concerts of support for Mumia Abu-Jamal, Leonard Peltier, the league anti-nazi and take part in the Rock for Choice . In 1993, they are of return to Lollapalooza (on the first scene this time). With Philadelphia, their fame becomes extensive when they protest against the Censure, in particular against Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC), while remaining on the scene completely naked during 14 minutes. The following day, they give a free concert in Los Angeles.

In December 1993, the group launches the clip of Freedom on the television channels in support for Leonard Peltier. The video mixes at the same time extracts in concerts of the group and the documentary one of 1992, Incident At Oglada , with passages of the book of Peter Matthiessen, In the Spirit off Crazy Horse . The clip becomes number 1 in the United States.

They continue their round in 1993 and 1994, while continuing to perpetrate their ideas, being thus done as many followers as enemies. In January 1994, Zack is interested of close with a Zapatist indigenous group of the south east of the Mexico, the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional (EZLN); at this time, Zack of Rocha is identified with a group which fights, according to him, the neoliberalism and capitalism established in Mexico by the United States.

1995-1996: The crisis

In 1995, the group is with Atlanta to record a new album, but the things become more complicated than envisaged. The four artists communicate little between them, and the frantic rate in the concerts tired them. In fact, it proves that environment within the group is far from being as good as it does not appear to with it. They agree a pause then; Zack benefits from it to go a few weeks to the Chiapas (Mexico), while the others are occupied with other occupations in their respective hearths.

Finally, they take again the adventure. They rent a room opposite their apartment in Los Angeles, and they end up carrying out their second album, Evil Empire (in French, “Empire of the Evil”). The title of this album refers to an expression employed by president Ronald Reagan to qualify the Eastern bloc. Beginning 1996, Rage plays Australian festival Big Day Out, where is turned it video of bulldozers One Parades .

1996-1997: The revival

Medium 1996, the group makes an appearance in the television program Saturday Night Live of the chain NBC, and causes an incident which is worth to him to be censured chain with life (to voir the “polemical” part for more information on the incident). The following day, it video of bulldozers one Parades passes on MTV, and Evil Empire leaves in the following days. Rage plays free the University of California, while Evil Empire is placed at the head of Billboard 200, thus dislodging Jagged Little Pill of Alanis Morissette.

During the summer 1997, Rage Against the Machine and the Wu-Tang Clan make a round together: it is the musical event of the summer in the United States. They occur in places like the Warped Tour , H.O.R.D.E , and the Lilith Fair Tour . RATM leaves on November 25th a DVD sobrement entitled Rage Against the Machine , which contains several services live collected during their round, like five their vidéos censured. The Ghost off Tom Joad , a song of Bruce Springsteen taken again by the group into live, figure also on this DVD. The group grants then a second pause at the end of 1997.

2000: Dissolution

During the design of The Battle off Los Angeles , the third album studio of the group, Zack of Rocha announces, fine 2000, which it will separate from the group to begin a career solo. According to him, the group is with court of new ideas since their album Evil Empire . Close relations of the members of the group also estimate that the ceaseless debates make the cohabitation impossible within the group.

2007: Reformation

In January 2007, the group announces its reformation. The reasons are still vague. Indeed the main reason would be the dissolution of Audioslave, announced by Chris Cornell for various conflicts within the group. However, of the rumors report that the group would be preparing a spectacular blow for the presidential election of the United States of America of 2008. A first album solo for Tom Morello (alias “ The Nightwatchman ”) is planned for the April 24th 2007.

The group will be reformed for the Californian festival of Coachella. They will give a concert Sunday April 29th 2007. The April 28th, Tom Morello will make a concert under the name of The Nightwatchman .

The concert of April 29th was the strong moment of the festival, the group having realized, after a very short introduction of Zack of Rocha (" We' Re Rage Against The Machine, from Los Angeles ") the set-list following:

  • Testify

  • bulldozers one Parades
  • People off the Sun
  • Bombtrack
  • Bullet in the Head
  • Know Your Enemy
  • Down Rodeo
  • Guerilla Radio operator
  • Renegades off Funk
  • Calm Like has Bomb
  • Sleep Now in the Fire
  • Wake Up
  • Freedom + Township Rebellion
  • Killing in the Name

The speech anti-Bush de Zack of so much awaited Rocha was made during the song " Wake Up" , of which here terms:

… " With good friend off bear said that yew the same laws were applied to U.S. Presidents ace were applied to the Nazi' S after World War II, then every individual one off 'EM, every last rich white one off 'EM from Truman one would cuts been hung to death, and shot. And this current administration is No exception. They should Be hung, and tried, and shot. Ace any war criminal should Be. Goal the challenges that we face, they go way beyond administrations. Way beyond elections. Way beyond every furnace years off pulling rising. Way beyond that, because this whole rotten system has become so vicious and cruel, that in order to sustain itself, it needs to destroy entire countries, and profit from to their rebuilding, in order to survives, and that' S not has system that exchanges every furnace years, it' S.A. system that we cuts to station-wagon down generation after generation after generation after generation after generation. WAKE UP! " …

The zdlr.net site also placed at the disposal on Internet photographs of this historical concert.

Moreover they also played this summer 4 concerts at the sides of the Wu-Tang Clan and a concert with Queens Off The Stone Age. The concerts with the Wu-Tang Clan took place the July 28th and 29th in New York, on August 11th with San Bernardino (Southern of California) and August 18th in San Francisco, within the framework of the platform hip-hop " Rock'n'roll the Bells". The concert with Queens Off The Stone Age took place on August 24th with East Troy (state of Wisconsin). They also played at the end of October Voodoo Music Experience Festival and Vegoose Festival. At the end of January 2008, at the beginning of February, they will play in Australia and New Zealand within the framework of the festival Big Day Out in Auckland, Gold Coast, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. In February 2008, they will play in Japan: 7 with Osaka, 9 and 10 with Tokyo. Musicalement, Rage Against the Machine mixes the Hard rock, through the solos of Guitare of Tom Morello, with phrased the Rap of Zack of Rocha. To a lesser extent, one feels also the influence of the Jazz on the low one of Tim Commerford, which played in a group of jazz in the Années 1980. Lastly, the battery of Brad Wilk is in charge of rates/rhythms Funk.

The Rage Against the Machine are the precursors, with the rappeurs Cypress Hill and Ice-T, of a style mixing Rap and metal appeared with the beginning of the Années 1990. It is a little the violent version and Hip-hop of the “rock'n'roll fusion” inspired by the Run-DMC. By harshly mixing an incisive rap with the very political texts, inspired directly of the virulence and bargaining power of Public Enemy, with the fronts of a tetanized metal (inherited the large Masters of the kind: Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin) and the rhythmic ones of a powerful and combative funk, the incandescent rock'n'roll of the RATM becomes a model of the genre.

According to Michael Woodswort, journalist with the Sun , Rage Against the Machine explodes in the industry of the disc like a musical version of The Anarchist Cookbook , the anarchistic work of William Powell. With its original mixture of metal, rap, and policy of extreme-left, the group carries out a first album so powerful which it shakes the apathetic teenagers and their fact of becoming aware of the injustices of capitalism. While speaking about the album Rage Against the Machine , founder and perfect example of the musical style of the group, it adds: Virtuoso clearer, the guitarist Tommy Morello adds interludes of scratching to his solos époustouflants and his fronts inspired of Black Sabbath. In Know Your Enemy , it is with the honor on four successive passages, in turn funky and frantic, playing some measurements of Speed metal before being thrown in a kind of boiling hysterical. During this time, Zack of Rocha launches rhymes menaçantes with an energy relentless, grates the urban autopropagande Bombtrack , recites the lesson of history of Wake up , ode with Martin Luther King, Malcolm X and Cassius Clay, or overlaps the radical groove Township Rebellion which is the account of the anti-impérialiste fight of Los Angeles to the South Africa. Of Rocha is a Master of the rough anger, which it releases as sound constructions of the group gain in intensity. Bullet in the Head , proclamation against the monopoly of the press, culminates on a wall of battery signed Brad Wilk and a gust devastator of Morello, whereas of Rocha barks the brutal refrain until extinction of voice.

Today, several groups declare heirs to RATM, others are sometimes criticized as being pale copies; one can quote like example Limp Bizkit, Linkin Park… Each one assumes this relationship more or less. But Michael Woodswort estimates that ten years later, the sound and the relevance of RATM remain unequalled.

Topics approached through the albums

Small pockets of the albums

For the first albums of RATM, the message is not present only in the words. Before even hearing the texts or the music, one is initially struck by the small pocket of the album.

Rage Against the Machine (1992)

The small pocket is based on a photograph of a Buddhist monk , Thích Quảng Đức, being immolant by fire to protest against the exactions of the South Vietnamese dictatorial mode of Ngô Đình Diệm, supported by the United States. This violent image, synonymous with opposition to the US government, gives an idea of the contents of the album.

Evil Worsens (1996)

Again, the small pocket transmits in advance the message of the group. It represents an young man, in the style of the images of propaganda of the ex- the USSR, disguised in Super-héros, thus pointing out Superman or other heroes of American Comic S. Just in lower part, the title Evil Empire , which is in fact the name that Ronald Reagan gave to the USSR, suggests that the United States is perhaps not so distant from this “Empire of the Evil”.

Zack of Rocha itself declares: Towards the end of the Cold war, the government of Reagan constantly tried to nourish fear in the American public opinion, by qualifying the Soviet Union of Empire of the Evil. In a certain way, it threw itself the stone because the United States made not badly atrocities in XXe century.

The Battle off Los Angeles (1999)

It is about a Graffiti on a wall, representing the contour of a man with the raised fist, symbol of the fight and engagement. The title, The Battle off Los Angeles , suggests to him also this idea of fight, and it is taken again besides for the round which follows, since each representation of the group is entitled there “The Battle off name of the city”. The title of this album would be a wink with bloody the riots of Los Angeles which burst in 1992.

Texts

All the texts of Rage Against the Machine are very committed politically, and turn around topics like the abuses capitalism or the lies of the media. The list which follows is not exhaustive but gives an outline of this engagement.

Critic of the capitalist system

It is undoubtedly the topic which generally returns in the songs of the group. One finds of them many occurrences with the wire of the albums:
  • Bombtrack ( Rage Against the Machine ) points out how the higher classes benefit from the lower classes: Landlords and power whores one my people they took turns. (“The owners and these dumbs of leaders played of the turns to my people. ”)

  • Voice off the voiceless ( The Battle off Los Angeles ) takes the defense of Mumia Abu-Jamal (called “The voice off the voiceless” (the voice of those which do not have any) by the media because it defended those to which one did not give the means of being made hear). Rage denounces here the seizure of the capacity on the media: You see the powerful got nervous, `causes He refused to Be to their being useful. (“Look at, the leaders became nervous because he refused to be their servant. ”)
  • In Testify ( The Battle off Los Angeles ), it is for example question of the race to the oil which involves many wars: The pipeline is gushing, while young stag we binds in tombs (“The pipelines overflow, while here one lies in tombs”) or Serious farmhouses for the pump and the price is set (“Of the tombs in mass for the pump and the price is fixed”).
  • In Know your Enemy ( Rage Against the Machine ), RATM shows us his vision of the American dream, quite different from what one with the practice to hear in the media: Compromised, conformity, assimilation, submission, ignorance, hypocrisy, brutality, the elite. All off which are American Dreams. (“Compromising, conformism, assimilation, tender, ignorance, hypocrisy, brutality, the elite. All are American dreams. ”)

The criticism of the media

One also regularly finds a denunciation of the media which show a modified reality:

  • Thus, in Take the Power Back ( Rage Against the Machine ), one can hear: One-sided stories for years and years and years. (“Only one point of view since years and years and years. ”)

  • In Bombtrack ( Rage Against the Machine ), the text is even more explicit: See through the news and views that twist reality. (“See beyond the infos and from the points of view which deform reality. ”)
  • Testify ( The Battle off Los Angeles ) evokes the vision of the war of the Gulf through the media: Mister Anchor ensures to me that Baghdad is burning. Your voice it is so soothing, that cunning will mantra killing off. I need you my witness to dress this up so bloodless. (“Mister the presenter, assures me that Baghdad burns. Your voice, so much alleviating, this skilful Mantra massacre. I need you, my witness, to make that less bloody. ”)

Others

Certain texts also condemn the preponderance of the religion in the policy: Take the Power Back (Take again the capacity) ( Rage Against the Machine ) denounces the influence of the religion on the Americans: They want custom to reduces and pledge and bow down to their God. (“They want that we make allegiance and that we engage and that we prosternions ourselves in front of their God. ”)

In its texts, RATM often suggests actions to be carried out to illustrate its remarks: also, in Bombtrack ( Rage Against the Machine ), of Rocha says to us I warm my hands upon the flames off the flag… (“I am heated the hands on the flames of the flag… ”); the group passes besides to the act to Woodstock (Edition 1999), during the song Killing in the Name , where they burned the American flag on scene.

Sociocultural impact

Ideology

Above all, Rage Against the Machine used its music like Social movement, and became thus the committed group most famous of the United States. An important aspect of the group is its political commitment of left, which led them to express on several occasions against the policy - interior and external - of the United States. In the wire of its existence, RATM took part in several protests in agreement with its convictions.

Thus, the group gave a concert animated in margin of the democratic national convention of 2000 to Los Angeles at the time of the American presidential campaign, where they violently criticized the American political system, that of “the Establishment” and invited the spectators present not to go to the ballot boxes.

In the same way, they played in neighborhoods of Wall Street on January 26th of the same year. Because of the crowd which had met to attend this concert (which was filmed and included in the clip Sleep Now in the Fire , realized by Michael Moore), the purse of New York had to close its doors right in the middle of the day, event which had not arrived since the Krach of 1929. Among the spectators, one found many employees of Wall Street, which seemed to appreciate the spectacle. Many of these images were used later with many Ironie in the video of Moore.

Shortly after the events of the September 11th, 2001, the group showed the United States to be responsible for violences similar to the attacks of the World Trade Center throughout the world. That involved the monitoring by the CIA of their official site and especially of their discussion forum, where virulent messages with regard to the US government were published.

Tom Morello, in an interview given to the review Guitar World , said: The United States autoproclament the country of the Liberté, but the first freedom which we have, and me, it is to you that to be exploited with the work. Once you will have used this freedom, then you will have lost control on what you do, which is produced and how it is produced, and, with final, the product will not belong to you any more. The only way of avoiding the chiefs is not to pay attention to oneself, which brings us to the second freedom, that to die of hunger.

In parallel, he answered the detractors who underlined the paradox between the orientations gauchists of the group and their signature at Epic Records, subsidiary of Sony: When you live in a capitalist company, information circulation depends on the invested money. Is Noam Chomsky opposed to the sale its works at Barnes & Noble? Not, because it is there that the majority of people buy their books. We do not wish to share our music only with those which know it already. It is brilliant to play in a given up place, squatté by anarchists, but it is also brilliant to be able to touch people with a revolutionary message, of Granada Hills until Stuttgart.

In addition to its disagreements and many social engagements, the group also began for freedom of expression, against the censure. Thus, in answer to the speech of the president Bill Clinton: One cannot claim that there is no impact on our culture and our children if there are too much violence which arrives to them by what they see and of what they make. We must ask the people who produce films violent one, CD, video games, to take well into account the consequences which result from this. And if they leave despite everything, they should at least not be sold to the children who made following the shooting of Littleton, allusion to the musical tastes of the fanatics who opened fire in High School, Tom Morello, taking the head of the critical artists of the speech, answered: The rock'n'roll is not responsible for the crimes violent one in the United States. It is very hypocritical on behalf of the policies of Washington to show the rock'n'roll of the finger and to make it pass for the provider of violence of the company, whereas they are fully occupied releasing bombs in ex-Yugoslavia. Who is the best model one of violence for the teenagers? President Clinton who the every day sacrifices in Yugoslavia a bus filled children and elderly, or somebody like Marilyn Manson, which nothing but does get dressed as if they were the every Halloween day and to sing with a voice of terror?

Demonstrations

The principal singularity of the group was its practice to launch polemics on subjects of topicality at the time of its concerts. Its radical political ideology brought to him a good number of detractors, but more especially much of sympathizers who were identified particularly with the message carried by the music of the group.

Support for Mumia Abu-Jamal

With the intensification of the “anti-Mumia” movement of the Department of police force of Philadelphia and Maureen Faulkner (widow of the civil servant assassinated Daniel Faulkner), the various organizations in favor of the release of Mumia Abu-Jamal organized a concert to collect the attention of the “political press”, with the participation of the Beastie Boys, of Bad Religion or Gang Starr. The concert was announced in all the media, and severely criticized by the elite of the country. As an introduction to the concert, Zack of Rocha declared: It would be said well that the fact of having to work to preserve the rights of which us should all be able to profit legally does not like everyone! .

Against the PMRC with Lollapalooza in 1993

During the festival Lollapalooza of 1993 in Philadelphia, the fame of the group grows when its members protested against the censure and the committee Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) while remaining naked on the scene during fourteen minutes complete, with in background music the guitar and the low one. With did a ribbon of Scotch tape on the mouth, they reveal their chest where were registered the letters P MR. R C to have blocked the access to certain stores, in sign of protest against the mark of jean Guess? . During this demonstration, the entry of the gallery Santa Monica Place had also been blocked.

At that time, the Department of the work of the United States (Department off Labor) inquired into the methods of Guess? , following the regular complaints of the employees, who said themselves, inter alia, exploited by the textile company.

Polemics

The controversy on the concerts of Rage is systematic: there are the communities Amish which were persuaded that RATM was connected with a diabolic worship and that ideas that the group conveyed were menaçantes; there are also the police officers, with whom them members of the group often had business because of their control; and finally the press, which was astonished by certain intrigues by the group. For example, several thousands of Americans were shocked when Tim put fire at the American flag with Woodstock, during the song Killing in the name off .

Rage had envisaged to play in the room The George in honor with George Washington, the December 13rd 1997. But the sheriff, William Weister, opposed it while trying to stop the representation. He had read documents which presented the group as being soldier, radical, undemocratic, violent and that it promoted the absence of law and anarchy . The attempt at cancellation in the concert does not succeed, and the concert finished under a strong police protection. This evening, Rage started the concert with its version of Fuck Tha Police (“the police force Screws”).

It was not the only polemic at the time of a concert of Rage. Similar events were very common in other cities to dominant preserving. However, Zack made abstraction of it and continued to benefit from time between two songs to express its opinion on political and social topics.

The incident during Video MTV Music Awards of 2000

During the handing-over of the prices of the Video MTV Music Awards of 2000, RATM would contribute for the price of the best clip of rock'n'roll (“Best Rock Video”). It is finally Limp Bizkit which accepted the reward; but whereas Fred Durst made his speech of thanks, Tim Commerford climbed a scaffolding above the scene and started to be balanced of before behind. Fred Durst reacts by declaring that Limp Bizkit was undoubtedly the group more haï of the world , and the retransmission TV left the place to the commercials. Tim declared then that it was only about one joke: he had all the same managed to prevent Limp Bizkit from on television playing his title into live. He finishes the night at the station with his bodyguards.

The incident in Saturday Night Live

The April 10th 1996, Rage was to play two songs during the emission of the NBC Saturday Night Live . The guest of the evening was the richissime republican ex-candidate with presidential the Steve Forbes. According to the guitarist, Tom Morello, Rage sought a means of marking his opposition to the multimillionnaire, which seemed to be devoted to tell jokes and to defend the Impôt atsingle rate (tax nonproportional to the income), while making his profession of faith in which he recalled the deep social and ethnic disparities to the United States. To illustrate this declaration, RATM tried initially, during a repetition, to hang two flags of the United States to back on the amplifying (as with its practice during the concerts). But the producers of Saturday Night Live and other leaders of NBC ordered to them to withdraw them, advancing that the patriotic would protest, and that they wished that all occur without hitch the involved from Forbes. Saturday Night Live also informed the group that they were going to censure some passages of Bullet in the Head (which was to be the second piece of the group) with the antenna, but also in the studio, where would be of the family and the friends of Forbes. The evening of the emission, after the first song and after the streamers brought by fans of the group had been withdrawn, some official of Saturday Night Live and NBC encircled the members of the group and ordered to them to leave the places. Hearing that, Tim (the bass player) made irruption in the cabin of Forbes and crashed to pieces some lamps on the ground before being controlled by safety.

" pieces inappropriés"

Following the terrorist attacks of the September 11th, 2001, a rumor was spread according to which the totality of the songs of the group were integrated into a list of pieces considered as inappropriate by Clear Chanel (list made public by the company) and which it had recommended to its stations to avoid diffusing to avoid shocking the families of the victims in the weeks following the attacks.

Cultural connections

  • Michael Moore, which carried out the vidéos Sleep Now in the Fire and Testify , is another artist famous for his documentary criticisms and sharp-edged on the preserving policy of North America, as show it its films Fahrenheit 9/11 on the Attentats of September 11th, 2001 and Bowling for Columbine which denounces the wearing of weapon to the the United States.
